Flu bug visits columnist and family

January 8, 2014

It looks like we are back to the rain again, and though we probably need it, I know everyone has really been enjoying the sunshine.

News from Naselle:

The Naselle Comets sports calendar for this week includes: Thursday, boys basketball at Raymond at 5:45 p.m .; Friday, girls basketball at South Bend at 7 p.m .; Saturday, boys basketball with South Bend in Naselle at 5:45 p.m .; Tuesday, boys basketball at Westport at 5:45 p.m .; January 16, girls basketball with Ocosta in Naselle at 7 p.m.

The Comet Booster Club will meet on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

Comet Booster Calendars are now available at Okie’s Select Market in Naselle, the Rosburg Store and at the school. They are a great way to keep up with who is having a birthday or an anniversary. The price is still $4.00.

Students will be released early at 12:30 p.m. on January 15 for teacher in-service.

Other news from the Westend:

New hours for the Grays River Valley Library/Community Computer Center are as follows: Mondays and Wednesdays- open from noon to 6 p.m., Tuesdays from 3 to 7 p.m., and Thursdays from 1 to 4 p.m.

Please join us for the second annual 3 C’s Chowdown: Chili, Chowder and Chicken Noodle Soup event which will be held in the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park on Sunday, January 19 from 1 to 5 p.m. Donations from the Chowdown will be used to help retrofit the gymnasium with more energy efficient lighting.

The Center depends on the generosity and volunteerism of the community to keep going, especially since no tax money is used for funding the activities.

The Rosburg Wednesday Senior Lunch Bunch meets at the Rosburg Hall each week for a good old fashioned home cooked meal prepared and served by Pat Potter and her volunteer crew. Lunch is served at noon.

CAP also sponsors senior lunches at the above location and some changes have been made, due to budget cuts. From now on lunches will only be served on Thursdays. Upcoming menus for the next two weeks include: Thursday, split pea with ham, spinach salad, and sliced oranges; Thursday, January 16- chicken Romesco, scalloped potatoes, and swiss chard.

I would like to thank Mary Saari for all she has done with the senior lunch program and for sending me the menus so that I could publish them in my column.

Happy birthday to the following celebrants this week: Jody Baker, Minna Webster. Ryan Torppa, Laureal Smalley, Mason Phipps, Dustin Adair, Jon Tienhaara, Howard Nelson, Jacob Williams, Aaron Jones, Alma Wirkkala, Joan Johnson, Annie Herrold, Dylan Wirkkala, Cody Wirkkala, Evan Hendrickson, Ed Rafferty, Haleigh See, Dakota Phillips, Noreen Fitts, Eric Wirkkala and Susan Amala. I wish each of you a very special day.

Happy Anniversary to Bill and Teresa Wood and to Phillip and Nancy McGuire.

The flu bug has decided to come and visit our house this week. All of us are feeling the chills, fever, coughing and sneezing, and I must say it is not fun. Stay well, everyone.
