A Christmas party was held last week

January 29, 2014

Is it winter yet? They say maybe some rain and cooler temps the rest of this week. We can certainly use a little rain, as the grass and brush is not as fire proof as it could be. It looks like someone on Covered Bridge Road found that out the hard way. Fortunately, not much damage was done, only grass and a couple fence posts. Take precautions with fire, no matter what the season is.

News from Naselle:

I had the pleasure of being invited to attend the Christmas Party (yes, that’s right) for the employees of Okie’s Select Market last Sunday evening. When we arrived at the Wet Dog Café, we were told by the greeter that the party had been cancelled because Christmas was over, and then he escorted us to our table with a big grin on his face.

What an interesting and fun group they were, and believe me I learned a lot of new things. Where else could you hear about how much fun it is to skydive with a first time diver friend who is 73 years old, and all she cares about is the color of her outfit. Or maybe discuss some of the best places to go zip-lining, with pictures of course; how to hug a skunk; how to start a pickup truck by patting it on the dash and talking nice to it ,: how to get yourself unstuck after getting caught in your back door on your way to work; what not to do if you are going down a hill with a wheelbarrow full of rocks; and probably the most interesting one-new and interesting uses for scotch tape.

An evening out with this group gives you a whole new perspective on the folks that wait on us daily when we shop at Okie’s. Thanks, Glenn and all the employees, for making me feel welcome and for a fun and interesting evening with some awesome people.

Other news from the Westend:

The Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park is interested in doing a few more activities to include some additional, healthy exercise for all ages. Remember we do offer yoga and aerobics during most of the year. We are looking for someone to teach a class in Tai Chi and also someone to oversee (manage) the exercise room. It looks like we will be acquiring some new equipment and we hope to be able to show folks the proper techniques to use the machines. If you are interested or know someone that is, please contact Penny Gregory or call 465-2310.

The Johnson Park Advisory Board meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 12:20 p.m. The meetings are open to the public and we would love to have your input and ideas brought to the board. Just remember that if you have an idea or a suggestion, we would hope that you would be prepared to step up to the plate and get involved with that project.

Do you want to shop on eBay? Do you have some items you would like to sell on eBay? There is a process you have to go through in order to do either purchases or sales. On Monday, March 10 the Grays River Valley Library will hold a class on the whole procedure from 1-3 p.m. In this class you will go through the whole process including signing up for Pay Pal, and the instructor will be Ramona Collver. Come join us for this free class.

TOPS (take off pounds sensibly) is still meeting each Thursday at 2 p.m. in the exercise room of the Grays River Valley Center. Check them out and learn how they are losing weight without using fad diets or pills—only common sense and it works.

This week’s Free Friday Night Movie at the Grays River Valley Center is not your normal run of the mill movie, but I’m told it will be a little different. It has been described as a Finnish Kung Fu flick. I plan to go just out of curiosity, but it is supposed to have a good story to it. Won’t you join us for this adventure in movies? Concessions are available. The show begins at 7 p.m.

A very thoughtful and community minded high school student, Grace Zimmerman, has sent me a request to let everyone know there will be another blood drive event taking place on Tuesday, February 25 from 1-5 p.m. at the Valley Bible Church located at 4723 SR 4 West, in Rosburg.

To make an appointment and donate, go to http://www.redcrossblood.org and use Sponsor Code valleybiblechurch or contact Grace Zimmerman at 360 465-2168.

She hopes to reach her goal of 24 donations, so mark your calendar and make your appointment.

March 22 is the date for the next big fundraiser for the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park. Please join us for our second annual spaghetti feed with our favorite guest chef, Penny Gregory’s dad, Nick, from Tacoma. I understand that her brother will also be pitching in with some other family members on this meal. This family is definitely a part of the center in effort and heart, as much of our kitchen equipment was donated by their church in Tacoma. We owe them a debt of gratitude, for all their help, dedication and kindness. More info to come on this event.

This is an open invitation to vendors, groups and individuals that would like to participate in a huge community indoor super sale that will be held at the Grays River Valley Center in the cafeteria on Saturday, March 29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you have tools, antiques, new, used or repurposed items that you would like to sell, you can reserve a table for only $10. Food, beverages and baked goods will be provided by the Friendship Circle of the Grays River United Methodist Church. A massage clinic will also be available during the sale hours.

To reserve your space please call 465-2740 or 465-2416. For more information contact Cheryl Dutcher. You will be able to set up on Friday afternoon.

The Rosburg Wednesday Senior Lunch Bunch meets at the Rosburg Hall each week for a home cooked meal prepared and served by Pat Potter and her volunteer crew. Lunch is served at noon.

CAP sponsors senior lunches on Thursdays at the same location. This week’s menu includes beef stew, spinach salad and mango slices.
