Lady Mules dump Trojans, Loggers

January 29, 2014

Last Thursday at home, the Wahkiakum Lady Mules beat the Pe Ell Trojans 53-49 in Central League basketball.

While the Mules struggled with shooting, Kayla Capps of the Lady Trojans didn’t miss much, hitting four of six from two point range and six of 11 from the three point line, making more than half of her team’s points.

The Lady Mules shot 71 percent from the free throw line, but only hit 31 percent from the field.

Sam Boyce led Mule scorers with 19 points. She also had three rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Baylee Olsen scored 12 points and had two rebounds, five assists and two blocks. Tori Wegdahl added nine points, 14 boards, three assists, three steals and one block. Kaylee Bryant, who fouled out, scored seven points, pulled down three rebounds and had one steal. Maya Stanley scored four points, had two rebounds three assists and two steals. Jessica Thomas added two points and two rebounds. Tyra Elliott and Peyton Souvenir pulled down one rebound each.

Coach Robbie Garrett was visibly concerned.

“The first half was good, we played like a team,” Garrett said. “The second half we seemed complacent and concerned about calls. We’ve been struggling as a team since the Toutle Lake game. Individually we’re doing good things. We just need to get on the same page and we’ll be alright.”

On Saturday, the girls traveled to Morton/White Pass and lost to the Timberwolves in a close one, 47-48.

Stanley led scoring with 13 points. Olsen added 11 and had four blocks. Boyce scored 10 points and had five assists. Bryant scored six points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Souvenir added three points and Tyra Elliott had two. Wegdahl scored two points and pulled down 13 rebounds.

“It was a good game,” Garrett said. “It was close the entire time. They had a one point lead at the end and we had six different opportunities to score but nothing would drop.”

On Tuesday, the Lady Mules met Onalaska at home and won 50-37.

Olsen scored 17 points and pulled down eight boards. Bryant had a double double with 10 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks. Boyce added nine points and eight assists. Wegdahl scored six points and nine boards. Stanley scored four points, had five rebounds and four assists. Jessica Thomas, Elliott and Souvenir each added two points.

“The girls did a good job executing and created a lot of turnovers,” said Garrett. “They can be great when they want to be. My challenge is to get them there mentally for all four quarters. We have a week before our next game so we’re going to get some rest and practice in.”

The team's next game is Tuesday at home against Mossyrock.
