WHS students capture robotics honors

This past Saturday, eight Wahkiakum High School students attend their first Robotics Competition and came with prizes for their work.

The event hosted 50 different schools competing in a Science Olympiad style robotics challenge. The event was called the Zillah Robot Challenge hosted by Zillah High School.

Luke Stacey, Elliot Haney and Aaron Bush captured the second place award for Maze Navigation with Infrared sensors. Using Computer programmed infrared sensors, they successfully navigated a complex maze with the second fastest time among the 50 teams in the tournament.

Hannah Arn and Dew Ausavapongkasame received a second place award for the Robot Sumo Wrestling Contest. In this phase of the competition, infrared sensors and infrared LED lights are used to locate and drive out an opposing robot in the style of a Sumo wrestling match.

The pair also picked up the third place award for overall excellence, and Stacey, Haney and Bush captured the fourth place award for overall excellence.

"These students worked very hard and did a great job representing our school," said faculty advisor Jeff Rooklidge, "and we are proud of their efforts."
