WHS cheerleading squad chosen

After four days of clinics and hard work with new Head Coach Jenny Batdorf, Wahkiakum High School has a new varsity cheerleading squad.

These girls were chosen by a panel of local judges that evaluated their performance of a variety of essential skills including projection, sharp motions, tumbling and enthusiasm, Batdorf said. These girls have already held a bake sale fundraiser at the Chevron and plan to host two more fundraisers including a youth cheerleading clinic prior to the Bald Eagle Day Festival, to assist them with their expenses of uniforms, equipment and summer camp.

The squad will attend Universal Cheerleaders Association Summer Camp at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma at the end of July. This camp will provide education, team building skills and proper skills and knowledge for stunting/tumbling safely.

The cheerleaders will soon be in the community searching for sponsors. Sponsors can be for a specific individual or the program in general. There will be advertising potential at both the high school football stadium and the basketball court. Interested may inquire at the high school office or look for the girls to distribute information soon.

"We are looking forward to bringing a new level of excitement and spirit to WHS and our community," Batdorf said. "See you in the stands! Go Mules!!"
