The Sheriff's Corner

Independence Day is in two weeks already. With that in mind I want to remind folks of the state law that provides the guidelines as to when they may be discharged. Last year we had an increase in the number of complaints regarding the types of fireworks discharged as well as the time they continued beyond what state law allows. Here is the law, RCW 70.77.395 in a nutshell when it comes to consumer use: Consumer fireworks may be used or discharged each day between Noon to 11 p.m. on June 28, 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on June 29 through July 3, 9 a.m. to midnight on July 4, 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on July 5, and 6 p.m. December 31 until 1 a.m. January 1.

Remember also to secure your pets during the Fourth of July. Be considerate of your neighbors. Fireworks are fun and we only get a few days a year to celebrate the birth of our free country, but don’t abuse the privileges we are afforded by setting off illegal fireworks that cause more damage and conflict with neighbors. Last year a resident lost a horse on the Island due to “louder than legal” fireworks being set off next to their livestock. One of the frantic horses escaped from the fenced pasture and was hit by a vehicle when it ran out into the road.

I want to express how proud I am of the seniors from both Naselle and Wahkiakum high schools who participated in the Wahkiakum Community Network these past few years. I have seen many of you grow as young adults and become leaders in your community. All of the seniors that qualified were awarded the Network scholarships. You all deserve applause for accomplishing many goals throughout the years and being a part of a crucial link to healthy families, healthy lives, and being productive members of your community. A big kudos to Austin Smith who remained an active member and board president even after graduation and while attending LCC. It has been my pleasure to work with you all and I look forward to working with the juniors and sophomores who will continue on next year. Congratulations on a job well done!

I hope everyone has a fun Fourth of July and remember to stay safe and be thoughtful!
