The Wahkiakum School District Board of Directors met for two hours on June 25 to continue discussion from the regular June 17 meeting about class sizes and the possibility of hiring more teachers.

According to Superintendent Bob Garrett, no action was taken, but another special school board meeting was called for July 17 at 4:30 p.m. to discuss where cuts might be made to the preliminary 2014-2015 budget in order to free up money for additional staffing.

In other business, Board Member Tim Hanigan moved to approve repairs to the roof of the Fritz building in order to create enough space for dry storage. Board Member Sue O’Connor seconded the motion. The estimated cost for the repairs is $9,600.

Chris Holmes, a representative of Wahkiakum County Health and Human Services, informed the board of the department’s interest in acquiring property from the school district for two projects. Garrett said he would notify Holmes if the school board decided to make any of the Farm Forest available for lease or purchase.

The board continued to discuss whether to allow eighth graders to play on high school athletic teams. No action was taken. The school district will continue to use eighth graders when necessary, as long as they have approval from Washington Interscholastic Activities Association and Central 2B League.
