Brush fires at Stella

On July 22, at 2:30 p.m. Wahkiakum Fire District #4 responded to a mutual aid request from Cowlitz 2 Fire and Rescue for a wildland water tender and wildland brush truck. Tender 408 from District 4 Ocean Beach Highway station and Brush 405 from the Elochoman Valley station responded.

Cowlitz 2 reported that multiple fires had been ignited along Ocean Beach Highway between miles posts 50 and 51 near Stella and were traveling quickly uphill. Conditions were very dry and the wind aided in fire spread. One lane of Ocean Beach Highway was closed while District 4 firefighters aided Cowlitz 2 with fire suppression and supplying water to fire fighting crews.

After the fire spread was contained the Department of Natural Resources assumed control of the incident. DNR hand crews constructed a fire line around the multiple fires that had converged into two larger fires. District 4 Tender 408 was requested to remain on scene to aid hand crews from the State. District #4 and DNR crews wrapped up the incident around 9 p.m. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
