The WSU Wahkiakum Extension Nutrition Education Program will host a one time Farmers Market for the students at Wahkiakum School District. The event is a partnership of the JA Wendt Elementary School, the John C. Thomas Middle School, and the Parent Teacher Organization.

The event will be held September 23 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is a no cost event for students. Farmers will be donating samples of what they grow for the students and staff. We are excited to help producers share the bounty of what is grown locally and help children experience fresh foods.

The students have prepared and planted their own school garden in the spring and many have cared for it over the summer months. Now is a time to experience what other produce is from here in our local area.

When a child has the opportunity to connect with their food from seed to harvest, they begin to have an increased understanding of the importance of farmers in their lives.

Each class will have an opportunity to visit the Farmers Market during the day. They can ask questions and try samples of foods. Students will be given a “passport” with farmers information and product information. Students who sample products at each station will be entered into a drawing to win a blender during an all school demonstration of making smoothies during the week following the event.

We would like to thank the following farmers and producers who agreed to attend and share their harvest with students: Grays River Holsteins, Islands End Farm, Phelan Dairy Farm, Skamokawa Creamery, Stockhouse Farm and Farmers Market.

There is room to add other farm tables at this event. If you are a farmer, rancher, fisherman or grower who would like to participate in this event, please contact me at the Wahkiakum County Extension Office, 795-3278.
