Westend news:

The OktoberFest fundraising dinner for the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park took place last Saturday and it turned out to be a huge success. I would like to thank our chef and his wife, Steve and Linda Ramsay, who worked tirelessly to put this delicious meal together. The volunteers who helped out with the serving and setup and cleanup were greatly appreciated.

An extra special thank you to the Wahkiakum Vibes group and their wonderful music; a treat for everyone. We hope they will come back. I have had nothing but good comments on the meal and the entertainment.

My biggest thank you goes to all the folks who took the time and made this event the success it turned out to be. Our community is the greatest, and it was delightful to see so many diners from Naselle and the Cathlamet area. With the support of all of you, our center will thrive. Thank you everyone.

Our Free Friday night movie this week is another recently released movie telling the true story of Colton Burpo, the four-year-old son of a small-town Nebraska pastor. After surviving emergency surgery, he begins talking about being able to look down and see the doctor operating and his dad praying in the waiting room. He also describes being in heaven, seeing God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, and meeting long-dead family members.

The movie starts at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria of the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park. Bring the family and enjoy another great movie. Concessions are also available with popcorn, candy and pop for reasonable prices.

Mark your calendar for some upcoming events at Johnson Park. Our annual Halloween trick-or-treating will once again take place on Friday, the 31st. Beginning at 5 p.m. kids can knock on the doors inside the old Rosburg School and get their treats from costumed characters. In the cafeteria, we will be serving free hot dogs and punch while you watch cartoons early in the evening, with a Halloween movie following on our big screen. Please join us for a fun filled evening, no matter what the weather. It’s all inside.

The Rosburg Community Club will host their annual Holiday Bazaar and chicken luncheon on November 1 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tables can be rented by individuals to sell their special wares by calling Barbara Rose at 465-2234.

This bazaar is one of a kind and is one of this group's largest fundraisers. With all the talented artists, seamstresses, bakers, candy makers, wood workers, etc., in our community, you can do much of your holiday shopping right here in one stop. Shop local and if you are one of the vendors you are doing the community and the Rosburg Hall a huge service by making your product available to so many.

On November 5, the Grays River Valley Center will be filled with vendors presenting information on “Living Well in Wahkiakum.” Sponsored by the Wahkiakum County Health and Human Services this second annual event will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park. Many service organizations will join together to bring you and your family a variety of community resources for all your needs. There will be information booths, presentations, individual signups, as well as details of how to prepare for your retirement years, Medicare, Medicaid and much more. A light lunch will also be available.

To sign up as a vendor or for more information please contact Terrie Howell, Wahkiakum Community Outreach at 360 795-8630 press option 2.

Thursday, November 6 is another opportunity for you to give a life saving donation of blood at the Valley Bible Church, located at 4723 SR 4 West in Rosburg from 1-6 p.m. For more information please call Susan Burkhalter at 465-2264. This is a correction on the date from last week’s column. My apologies for any inconvenience.

Needing blood in an emergency situation isn’t a pleasant thought or experience, so these blood drives are essential to all of us. My thanks to all the donors who are able and willing to give this life saving gift. This gift is especially meaningful to me as it was needed recently for one of our family members.

The Rosburg Wednesday Senior Lunch Bunch meets each week at the Rosburg Hall for a delicious home cooked meal prepared and served by Pat Potter and her volunteer crew. Lunch is served at noon.

On Thursdays a senior meal is also served at the above location and it is sponsored by CAP.
