The Wahkiakum Mini-Mules extended their league winning streak to five games with a decisive 41-14 win last Saturday over a Kelso youth team.

The game started with the Mules scoring on just three plays, capped by an 18 yard run by Brody Carlson, which gave the Mules an early 6-0 lead. After Kelso scored on their ensuing possession, the Mules trailed 6-8.

The Mules fumbled twice on the rain-soaked field, but also recovered a fumble. The team also forced a punt after Bryson Havens broke through the Kelso line for a pivotal sack.

The Mini-Mules scored again after a long run by Braxton Johns set up a quarterback sneak by Gabe Moon. Carlson added a two point extra point kick to put the Mini-Mules up 14-8.

Another touchdown run by Carlson for 23 yards finished the first half scoring at 20-8.

After Kelso returned the second-half kickoff for a touchdown, the Mini-Mules clamped down defensively, holding Kelso scoreless the rest of the way, and with only a couple of first downs.

Jake Leitz scored on a 65 yard scamper around the right end. Carlson's two point extra point kick gave the Mini-Mules a 28-14 lead. Leitz later added another five yard touchdown and Carlson an extra-point run conversion to extend the lead to 35-14.

The Mules turned a second half fumble recovery into a 20 yard touchdown run by Leitz which completed the scoring at 41-14.

Carlson recovered an onside kick by Ashden Neimeyer and the Mini-Mules second team offense/defense completed the fourth quarter.

The Mini-Mules now play for the league championship at 1 p.m., at Kelso High School on October 25. The team encourages any who can to come and support and cheer at Kelso this Saturday.

Last week, the game had been scheduled as an evening game at Wahkiakum High School, but a scheduling issue with the other coach's availability required the game to be moved earlier to Kelso.
