Indians stop Mules in season finale

The Wahkiakum Mule 2014 football season came to a close in a 46-21 loss to the Toledo Indians last Thursday.

The Mules had a bright start; they dumped the Toledo ball carrier for a four-yard loss on the game's first play from scrimmage. However, on the second play, the Toledo runner took off for a 63-yard touchdown. A conversion kick gave the hosts a 7-0 lead at 11:15 of the first quarter.

The Indian defense kept the Mules on their heels most of the game. Toledo scored three more times in the first quarter for a 27-0 lead after 12 minutes.

The Mules got on the score board at the start of the second quarter. Quarterback Gunnar Blix connected with receiver Brandon Budd for a 27-yard touchdown pass at 9:19. Hank Ferguson ran the conversion to cut the score to 27-8.

Toledo responded with a touchdown and led 35-8 at halftime.

Toledo opened the third quarter with a scoring drive to go up 40-8.

Blix scored on a one-yard drive at 4:40 of the third quarter and kicked the conversion to make the score 40-15.

Toledo added a touchdown at the end of the third quarter to lead 46-15. Blix scored on a 12-yard run at 6:23 of the fourth quarter to make the score 46-21.

Toledo, who finished second in Central League standings, rolled up 288 yards of rushing offense and 92 in the air. The Mules manged only 55 yards rushing. Blix completed 15 of 29 passes for 175 yards, with one interception and one touchdown. Budd caught seven passes for 137 yards and a touchdown. Ferguson caught five for 31 yards; Joey Moore caught two for eight yards, and Ryan Quigley had one reception for five yards.

On defense, Blix participated in 18 tackles; Ferguson 13, Trystan Mendez 11; Kody Vik, Moore and Brock Cothren each had eight, and Budd six. Ferguson recored a quarterback sack and recovered a fumble.

The Mules finished the season with a 3-6 record. The team's seniors were Budd, LaBerge, Mendez, Tanner Bergseng and Kyle Stump.
