Mules win two matches in Wednesday night volleyball

Headed to state, play Darrington on Saturday

The Wahkiakum Mule volleyball team beat Toutle Lake in five sets to earn a berth at state on Wednesday in Napavine, 19-25, 25-23, 25-22, 19-25, 15-7.

“It was a hard fought match on both sides of the court,” Coach Kayli Hurley said. This was a great team effort, from the court to the bench. The girls played and cheered with great heart.”

Baylee Olsen had 16 kills, four digs and two blocks. Tori Wegdahl had 15 kills and passed 2.43 out of a possible 3.0 in serve receive. Kaylee Bryant added seven kills and Morgan Elliott had 28 assists.

The Ducks headed home after the loser out match and the Mules had a short rest before they faced Life Christian High School from Tacoma. The Mules beat the Lady Eagles in three sets, 25-23, 25-15, 25-15.

In the first set, the Mules were quickly behind by as much as 10 points. They had expended a lot of energy and focus to beat Toutle Lake and it took them a little time to reenergize.

“The girls finally kicked it in gear and worked hard to win,” Coach Hurley said. “I am one proud coach tonight. My girls played with energy and fire and it really made all the difference.”

Wegdahl had nine kills and eight digs. Olsen had five kills, three blocks and was 100 percent from the serving line. Bryant added six kills and Makenzie Anderson added four more. Peyton Souvenir had 15 assists.

The Mules face Darrington for the second time in District play on Saturday, November 8 at 10 a.m. at Adna High School. Win or lose, they will play a second match on Saturday against an as yet undetermined team.
