Naselle has been picked as the #1 seed for the SWW, District 1B volleyball tournament and they will host the #4 team from the Columbia 1B league on Tuesday, the 4th at 7 p.m.

No school for students on Tuesday, the 11th in honor of Veterans Day. Early dismissal at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for parent/teacher conferences.

Mochas & More coffee shop in Naselle has met their goal of donations to give a thank you dinner to each of the EMS volunteers and a guest in the Naselle area. Now they have issued a challenge to the western Wahkiakum population to do the same for their volunteers. Anyone interested in taking on the challenge of collecting and handling a project of this kind? It’s a great idea. Let me know if you are willing to handle the details and I will post a weekly update in this column.

Other news from the Westend:

This past weekend I had nearly a dozen calls from concerned neighbors about a letter they had received in the mail. I did not receive one, even though all of my close neighbors did and so did most everyone in the Grays River Valley all the way to Rosburg. Someone went to a great deal of trouble and expense with this mass mailing, and all for nothing as it does not apply to our unincorporated part of the county.

The letter read “Please, stop shooting guns around our houses.” in large capital letters. No signature, and was accompanied by a copy of WAC 332-52-145 - Firearms and target shooting. This WAC refers to target shooting on managed lands, and does not apply to private property.

The envelopes were handwritten with the recipient address and stamped in the return address spot with “Concerned Citizens of Grays River, Wa.” and without an address to go with the name.

There are many citizens in Grays River who consider themselves “concerned citizens” and are good stewards of their land and their activities on that land, but they don’t lurk in the shadows and send out anonymous letters with inserts that have no bearing on their allegations.

This situation sounds vaguely like someone who has moved here from the big city, has no idea about country life, shooting, sighting in guns prior to hunting season, and remember it is hunting season. If this is the case, my recommendation is for them to return to the rat race, or come out of the shadows and talk to the people who live here and take care of their own.

The Halloween party in the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park was a night to remember for many. Lots of kids, plenty of free candy, hot dogs and punch as well as cartoons and a movie on the big screen.

Since many of us live so far out in the country, most of us don’t get many trick or treaters, This was the perfect opportunity for a very special lady to get her fill of all the fun of seeing kids in costume and putting hands full of candy in their bags. Our favorite candy distributer this year was 92 year old Shirley Cantrell of Rosburg. She made a beautiful “good witch.” and we hope she will join us again next year. Thank you so much, Shirley

The Free Friday night movie this week is a family friendly 2013 release about two turkeys from opposite sides of the tracks who must put aside their differences and team up to travel back in time to change the course of history - and get turkey off the holiday menu for good.

Concessions are available with popcorn, candy and pop. The movie starts at 7 p.m.

The American Legion Post #111 in Deep River will be sponsoring their annual Fall breakfast this coming weekend on Saturday November 8, from 8-11:30 a.m. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children 6 and under and may be purchased at the door. Pancakes, eggs, sausage or ham, juice, coffee, etc.

Raffle tickets will also be sold for a Husqvarna 270 rifle. Proceeds from this breakfast will be used for helping local vets, and other local charitable causes.

The new West End Food Pantry hopes to be open soon and is receiving lots of items, including frozen foods that must be kept frozen. If you have a working freezer and would like to donate it to this good cause please call Joel Fitts at 360-465-2629.

They are also in need of personal hygiene items, soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste, cleaning supplies, etc. Here’s another opportunity where neighbors are helping neighbors.

The Rosburg Wednesday Senior Lunch Bunch meets at the Rosburg Hall each week for a delicious home cooked meal prepared and served by Pat Potter and her volunteer crew. Lunch is served at noon.

On Thursdays a senior meal is also served at the above location and is sponsored by CAP.

Happy Birthday to the following: William Potter, Jim Bauer, Carol Dziados, Renee Hunsinger, Dave Batt, Connor See, Louise Hunter, Barbara Swanson, Rebecca Rose, James Laney, John Berquist, Adrianne Howard, Carolyn Simukka, Phillip Nelson, Judeen Alves, Aaron Larson, Bill Pratt, Abigayle Eaton, Judith Emmick, Logan Albright, Otis Hunsinger, Jacob Scrabeck and Alfred Simukka.

Happy Anniversary wishes go out to a very special couple, Alan and Penny Gregory. He will probably be out in the woods and she is basking in the sun in Hawaii. Wishing my wonderful friends a nice day of celebrating and wishing you many more years of wedded bliss.
