Today (Thursday) is the big day for the opening of the West End Food Pantry. Located in the Grays River Valley Center (the north end of the building), the food distribution hours are on Thursdays from noon to 5 p.m. For more information please call Shonda Ware at 465-2722 or Linda Ramsay at 465-2731.

If you would like to donate to the WEFP (West End Food Pantry), there is a drop off box in the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park.

The Free Friday Night Movie this week is a kid friendly show, rated PG. Bring the family and enjoy an evening of fun entertainment on our big screen with surround sound. Start time is 7 p.m. Concessions are also available with popcorn, soda pop and candy. Our thanks to everyone who attends these movies each week and supports our efforts to make the Grays River Valley Center a success.

The synopsis for the show this week: Tuck, Munch and Alex are a trio of inseparable friends whose lives are about to change. Their neighborhood is being destroyed by a highway construction project that is forcing their families to move away. Two days before they are to go their separate ways, the boys begin receiving a strange series of signals on their phones. They are convinced that something bigger is going on, so they team up with another school friend, Emma, and set out to look for the source of their phone signals. What they discover is something beyond their wildest imaginations. It is a small alien who has become stranded on Earth and needs their help. The four friends come together to protect the alien and help him find his way home. This wondrous adventure is their story, and their secret.

If you have been in the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park to shoot a few baskets in the gym, you know that hasn’t been possible for the last couple of weeks. Monte Givens and John Zimmerman are in the process of reconstructing the hangers for the new basketball backboards and hanging them. The new backboards were purchased through fundraising by Gene Quillhough and are adjustable so they will make it easier to teach younger and shorter players the fine art of basketball. These volunteers also have full time jobs so we have to thank them for giving their time as they can for this project. After all is said and done, our kids will benefit and so will the adults in the community who like to play a game of basketball now and then. The Johnson Park Advisory Board apologizes for any inconvenience to our sponsors and hope you understand.

More new equipment is coming into the exercise room at GRVC, compliments of Sadie and Fred Lehr. Fred brought in a new elliptical machine a while back and he has now purchased more new things for our use. The new equipment will be delivered today (Thusday), and I will give a better accounting in next week's column.

It’s that time of year once again, and Santa is getting ready to make his rounds, visiting with kids to find out if they have been naughty or nice. Here’s your chance to meet with him and enjoy a very unique and traditional event which takes place at the Grays River Grange every year at this time.

Mark your calendar, bring a pot luck dish, your best smile and singing voice and join in with your family and friends for an evening of family fun on Tuesday, the 9th at 6:30 p.m. in the Grays River Grange Hall. Enjoy a pot luck supper, Christmas caroling, recognition of long time Grange members, gift exchange and as always the delightful reading of “T’was the Night Before Christmas” by Bob Pyle.

In the gift exchange, you can bring a gift, not to exceed the value of $5 and marked for a man or a woman. If you bring a gift for your child, please put their name on it and place it under the Christmas tree.

This event brings out the true meaning of what Christmas should be about, with the joy of sharing and caring. It is always an exceptional evening, thanks to the Grange tradition.
