Health department restores family planning services

January 22, 2015

The Wahkiakum County Health Department is opening their doors for family planning again.

The health department hasn't provided the services for several years because of reductions in funding, which has now been restored.

“We’re reopening the program,” Sue Cameron, Health and Human Services Director said. “It’s not earth shattering. Most communities have them. We are focused on reducing unintended pregnancies for anybody. I realized that people were coming in for pregnancy tests and leaving without a method. We have to bridge that gap.”

The services will include exams, counseling, STD/HIV testing and birth control, including IUDs. Everything is confidential and available to anyone over the age of 14, male or female.

Wahkiakum County Health Officer, Dr. Sarah Present, will be available to do exams on the first Tuesday of every month, but patients can speak with the nurse any time.

“Anyone can come,” Cameron said, “even if they have another provider and regardless of how much money they have. If they have insurance, we’ll bill them, if not, we’ll put them on a sliding fee scale.”

The clinic opens on February 3, but appointments can be made now by calling 360-795-6207.
