Wahkiakum's Maddie Mace takes a hit while shooting in the Mules' win over Adna last week.

The Wahkiakum High School girls basketball team quickly put their solitary loss of the season to Toutle Lake behind them last Wednesday and added two more to their win column in the following days, easily beating Adna and Pe Ell.

At Toutle Lake, the Mules were ahead of the Ducks 12-6 at the end of the first quarter but found themselves behind by two by the end of the second. The final score was 45-49.

"I was fully confident that we were going to beat Toutle Lake," Coach Rob Garrett said. "We had a great first quarter, we were up 12-6. Holding Toutle Lake to six points is awesome. In the second quarter we were flat, unable to hit anything and the Ducks flipped it on us."

By the end of the third quarter, the Mule team was down by 11.

"Last year's team would have rolled over and lost that game by 25 minimum," Garrett said. "The girls bought in. They played defense, went after every rebound, had their hands up and were talking. We got back into the game and were down by two. We had three chances to go ahead or tie it up. When you're down 15 in the second half and have an opportunity to win or tie it up, you can't ask for more than that, especially against a team like the Ducks. Overall, it was a good game for us."

Sam Boyce led the team with 16 points, six rebounds, five assists and one steal. Peyton Souvenir and Baylee Olsen added nine points each. Olsen had 11 rebounds, one steal and four blocks and Souvenir had four rebounds, two assists and one steal. Kaylee Bryant scored seven points, pulled down three rebounds and had one assist and four blocked shots. Tori Wegdahl had four points, eight rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block.

The Mules shot 34 percent overall.

On January 15, the Mules came away with an easy win against Adna at home, 46-22.

"Adna is a lot better than they played tonight," Garrett said. "Our defense was great. We gave up five points in the first quarter, four in the second and 13 in the whole second half. Jessica (Thomas) had a great game. She was rebounding, flying around and blocking out. She does a lot of the little stuff that doesn't show up in the stats. She had a really big game tonight. Kaylee had a good game tonight and so did Peyton. We did a lot of little things better tonight than we have been."

Boyce led scoring again with 17 points. She added six rebounds, four assists and six steals. Wegdahl, Olsen and Souvenir all had seven points. Wegdahl also had six rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block. Olsen had six rebounds, three assists and one steal. Souvenir had four rebounds and three assists. Bryant added four points, four rebounds and three blocks. Mya Kirzy and Maddie Mace had two points apiece. Thomas had three rebounds and one steal. Marissa Longtain had one rebound and one assist. Grace Peacock had one rebound, one assist and one steal. Savannah Burdick had four rebounds.

The Mules shot 47 percent from two point range and 57 percent from the free throw line.

The Mules traveled to Pe Ell on Tuesday and beat the Trojans 62-30. Their lead was solidified in the first half with a 23 point lead.

Olsen led the team in scoring with 15 points. Souvenir scored 12 and had seven rebounds, eight assists and four steals. Wegdahl scored 11 points, pulled down five rebounds and had five assists and four steals. Peacock added seven points. Bryant had six points and six rebounds. Mace scored five points; Boyce scored four points and grabbed five rebounds, and Thomas had two points.

"Tori Wegdahl and Peyton Souvenir had great all around games," Coach Garrett said. "We did well tonight. It was a good team game, a good win and it was fun to watch."

Tonight (Thursday) the Lady Mules face Winlock at home. On Saturday, they face Mossyrock in a double header with the boys.
