Blood drive set for January 23

Down River Dispatches

January 22, 2015

Well, as I am sitting here in the waiting room of St. John’s, I decided that this is as good a place as any to work on writing my article for this week. I have lots of company waiting for their loved ones to have surgery. I am here with my sister, Diane who is having a hip replacement. She will be off work for several weeks, so if you don’t see her at Okie’s, that is the reason.

News from Naselle:

Other news from the Westend:

A blood drive is scheduled for this Friday, January 23, from 12:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Valley Bible Church and there are only 14 more appointments available. If you make an appointment, you will be eligible to win a $5.00 certificate from Mochas & More. In addition, two people will be chosen at random from the appointment schedule. If you don’t have an appointment and just show up you will still have a chance for another random drawing. In other words, you and whoever the recipient of your donation is, everyone wins in the long run. Let’s help reach their new goal of 50 units. For more information, call Susan Burkhalter at 465-2264.

The annual Crab and Oyster Feed is this weekend on Saturday, January 31, from 6 p.m. to midnight. Sponsored by the American Legion Deep River Post #111, and if you don’t have your ticket yet, you may be out of luck. Tickets are $28 per person. For the dance (9 p.m. to midnight) only, the price is $5.00 per person.

For more information or to purchase tickets please contact Ken Elliot at 465-2274, Judith Emmick at 465-2680 or Dale Rose at 465-2234.

What does it actually mean to be “homeless?” The definition is much broader than most people think. Are you staying on someone’s couch (family or not)? Are you staying in a shelter or a place that provides temporary accommodations? That would be just a couple of examples of being considered homeless. On Thursday, January 29, Wahkiakum Health and Human Services will be involved in an annual count of the homeless within our county, called Point in Time Count.

If you or anyone you know is without permanent housing, there are many resources available to you, and this is the perfect opportunity to check them out. There are two locations offering information, services, enrollments, assistance and giveaways on the above date from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Those locations are: Johnson House at 80 Division St. in Cathlamet and in the new West End Pantry located in the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park (the old Rosburg School).

For questions and more information please contact Terrie Howell at 360 795-8630.

There was a good turn out for the CCC Dinner at the Johnson Park Center last Sunday despite the fact that one of the biggest football games of the season was being played. Thank you to all our supporters who came by, and especially to the cooks, Steve and Linda Ramsay for making the clam chowder and chicken noodle soup and to Penny Gregory for her wonderful chili. It was delicious.

We are issuing a call for vendors and individuals to participate in a Community In-Door Super Sale at Johnson Park Center on Saturday, March 28. This is a fundraiser for Grays River Valley Center. Johnson Park Center is the old Rosburg school building. The cost for table space is just $10. Call 360-465-2740 for more information and to reserve your space. Sale hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Set up will be Friday afternoon, March 27. Available during the hours of the sale will be food (hamburgers, and hot dogs with the trimmings), beverages and bake sale items provided by the Friendship Circle of the Grays River United Methodist Church. Also, a massage clinic will be part of the event.

The West End Food Pantry is open on Thursdays in the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park on the north end of the building. Their hours are 1-5 p.m.

The Rosburg Wednesday Senior Lunch Bunch meets each week in the Rosburg Hall to enjoy a home cooked meal prepared and served by Pat Potter and her volunteer crew.

On Thursdays a senior meal is also served at the Rosburg Hall and is sponsored by CAP. These lunches are served at noon and offer an opportunity for a nutritious meal and a little socializing. Check out both venues.
