The 16th Annual Chocolate Extravaganza to benefit the Charlotte House Domestic Violence Shelter was declared a success, raising more than $1,400 for the advisory board's discretionary fund.

The event was held on Friday, on the eve of Valentines Day, and was complemented by the activities at Tsuga Gallery including the Woman's Club Pie Social and a Valentines Day Party.

"It went really well," said Charlotte House Director Susan Schillios. "It didn't feel like it was really busy. There never was a big crowd. People drifted in and out, but the end result was awesome. We made more this year than probably the last couple years."

The chocolates were prepared by 21 local bakers, and four volunteers helped set up the lobby for the event, prepare boxes and help patrons choose amongst the 23 chocolate selections.

Several of the pre-made boxes were dropped off at Drop Anchor Brewery on Friday and Saturday, where they were a hit, selling 10 the first night and two the next on what was reported to be a quiet Valentines Day, according to Schillios.

"We were very pleased," Schillios said.

The money raised will go directly into the Charlotte House Advisory Board's discretionary fund. The board dips into this fund to pay for items not covered by their contract for families at the shelter or in the community. The board has used it to provide swim passes for children at the shelter, or to give a family cash to enjoy the Bald Eagle Day festivities or for a trip to the fair.
