Mules head to state track meet

Wahkiakum Mule athletes are headed to the state 2B track meet this week. They are, top, l-r, Cheyenne Barton, Rory Heywood and Shelbie Abbot, and bottom, Shona Heywood, Aly Kirzy and Grace Peacock.

Sophomore Cheyenne Barton and two relay teams qualified for the State 2B Track Meet after competing in the District IV 2B Championship in Raymond last Thursday. To qualify, boys had to finish in the top six in their events and girls had to finish in the top seven.

Barton will compete in the 400 meters at state after a sixth place finish in the event with a time of 1:05.27. She will also compete in the 4x100 meter relay along with Shelbie Abbot, Shona Heywood and Rory Heywood, who took fourth place at district with a time of 54.83. The 4x400 meter relay team of Barton, Abbot, S. Heywood and Grace Peacock will make a showing at state after placing seventh with a time of 4:32.16.

Senior Nevan Bingham ended his season taking seventh in the 100 meter and 200 meter races, with times of 11.92 and 24.01, respectively. Senior Ethan Cothren placed 12th in the shot put with a throw of 38-04.

Sophomore Tarah Wisner placed 11th in the shot put with a throw of 27-05. Junior Rory Heywood placed eighth in her events, clearing 4-06 in the high jump and leaping 31-09 in the triple jump.

The State 2B Track and Field Meet starts tomorrow (Friday) at Eastern Washington University in Cheney.
