Wahkiakum Mule Zach Brown holds off an aggressive defender in last week's 43-76 loss to MWP.

Though the Wahkiakum Mules boys basketball team struggled with two more losses last week, they were able to add another tally to their win column when they beat Onalaska 49-41 at home on Saturday.

Zach Brown led scorers with 21 points and eight rebounds. Ryan Quigley and Joey Moore had 12 points apiece. R. Quigley also had five rebounds. Luke Brown and Hank Ferguson added two points each. Ferguson pulled down 12 rebounds and L. Brown had 10 more.

"We started out slow," Coach Todd Souvenir said, "but we gave the team some encouragement during a time out four minutes into the game when we were down 2-8. After that the boys seemed to play with some energy and execute the game plan. We wanted to limit their two shooters and one post player as much as we could. When it was over we held them to a total of 16 points combined. They held us to 22 points in our last meeting and we knew we needed to run and score before Onalaska could get set in the their half court defense. Although we didn't shoot that well from the perimeter we did get up the court and get a few easy buckets. The win gives us some hope for districts if we can get a win in one of our two final games."

Last Wednesday the Mules faced Morton White Pass in the John C. Thomas middle school gym due to a plumbing problem at the high school. MWP leads the league and remained undefeated after beating the Mules 43-76.

R. Quigley led the team in scoring with 19 points. Moore added 14 points. Ferguson had five points and L. Brown had four points. Z. Brown had one point, six rebounds and four assists.

"We fell behind early to a very good team and couldn't recover," Souvenir said. "They are good on both ends of the court but extremely good on the defensive end which is why they are undefeated in league play the last three years."
