Choose to be admirable

April 21, 2016

To The Eagle:

I was unaware our county had areas bearing the name “Jim Crow.” Had my family and I known about these places prior to moving to Cathlamet, we would have given prayerful consideration to if the move was in our best interest and, honestly, if it was safe to live here.

I understand that political correctness has become overbearing in recent history; however, there is a difference between politically correct and stubborn insensitivity. Whether or not you have felt the sting of discrimination or racism, it is undeniable the negative emotions and connotations the name “Jim Crow” stirs up.

I agree with Mr. Nelson; if these places were truly named to honor a man named Jim Saules, then changing the names to Jim Saules Point and Jim Saules Creek would show respect to Mr. Saules without simultaneously disrespecting others. Changing the name to give recognition to the man it is supposed to honor would also not be a threat to the heritage of the area. Instead, it would further deepen the heritage since the question of who or what was being honored would no longer be relevant.

Change for change’s sake is pointless and can be harmful, but changing something, especially something precious to you, once you realize how others are affected by it is admirable. My prayer is the citizens of this county will choose to be admirable.

Editor’s note:After last week’s articles in The Daily News and The Eagle, a Skamokawa manwho wishes to remain unnamed obtained a form to petition the Board of Geographic Names to rename Jim Crow Peak, Creek and Point.
