Westend news:

May 1st, is what the reader sign says in front of the Grays River Café as the re-opening date, under the new ownership of Ken and Sandy Ruch. This is exciting news for us here on the Westend and hopefully the entire area, to have another new business in our community and to have it owned by a local family. I don’t have any more information on days and times but will hopefully have the rest of those facts for next week’s column.

If you happen to drive by and the open sign is out, stop in and say "Hi" and grab a bite to eat. Let’s let them know we appreciate them being here.

Put on your running shoes, it’s time once again to make a run for it. The 32nd Annual Great White Tail Run sponsored by Wahkiakum 4-H will be held on May 14 in the Julia Butler Hansen National Refuge located in Skamokawa. Start time is 10 a.m. The event includes 10K, 5K and 2 mile courses with recognition for overall male and female winner in each distance and ribbons for the top three finishers in each age division.

Entrants are encouraged to pre-register and the fees are: pre-run $10 without a shirt, $20 with a shirt. Run day registration and pre registration packet pickup begins at 8:30 am at Skamokawa Vista Park with run day cost of $12 without a shirt and $25 with a shirt. If you are bringing your dog and want to compete for an award in this division, please add $1. Family and youth groups are entitled to a discount. To guarantee a shirt, you must have your entries in by May 1. Mailed entries must be received by May 13.

Official dog rules: Socialized dogs only. Dogs should be at least six months old with current vaccinations. Dogs must be on leash at all times and stay on designated course. Female dogs in season are not permitted.

The 14th Annual Spring Tea and Luncheon sponsored by the Grays River United Methodist Church’s Friendship Circle will be held on May 15 with doors opening at 11:30 a.m. Entertainment this year will feature comedian and magician Steve Hamilton who will perform in a show about 20-25 minutes long and will entertain all ages.

A suggested donation at the door of $8 per person, and under 12, $5. For more information please call 465-2740 or 484-7749.

As always there will be lots to look at and talk about when you arrive, this year it will include unusual kitchen antiquities, aprons, cookbooks, etc. The Appelo Archive Center will have copies on Donna Gatens-Klint's book “The Magic in the Backwoods Kitchen” for sale at the luncheon as well.

The Pick Your Own Prize raffle will be held during the event with tickets being only $1 each, and a silent auction as well with proceeds being donated to the West End Food Pantry.

On the menu will be scones, fresh fruit, sandwiches and savories, veggies and dip, tea and punch and an extra special dessert plate. Bring a friend, dress up or come casual, wear a fancy hat or not, for a fun afternoon.

This week’s Free Friday Night Movie will be rated R, so is not recommended for family viewing. The movie is a 2015 British biographical romantic drama film about a fictitious love story loosely inspired by the lives of Danish artists Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener. Lili and Gerda's marriage and work evolve as they navigate Lili's groundbreaking journey as a transgender pioneer.

Concessions are available with popcorn, soda, coffee and candy for a nominal fee, with a free popcorn refill at intermission. The show starts at 7 p.m.

The Rosburg Wednesday Senior Lunch Bunch meets each week in the Rosburg Hall for a tasty lunch which is prepared and served by Pat Potter and her volunteers.

On Thursdays a senior meal is also available at the above location and is sponsored by CAP. Lunch is served at noon at both venues.
