District track today; school concerts next week

Down River Dispatches

News from Naselle:

Sports events this week: Today (Thursday), high school district track meet in Naselle at 5 p.m.

On Monday, the Naselle High School and Middle School will perform in their Spring Concert at 7:00 p.m. and on Tuesday, the 24th the Elementary School will perform their annual Spring Concert at 6:30 p.m. These events culminate a year’s worth of practice and hard work to bring the community a wonderful reminder that music is important to all of us, and these kids have strived to bring their best for our enjoyment. A huge thank you as well to the teachers who take the time with these students and give them the guidance and training for each performance.

Students will be released early on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. for teacher in-service.

In the next couple of weeks the Class of 2016 will be making their final preparations for a new chapter in their lives, whether to go on to college, work, or whatever they deem to be important to their future. They have all worked hard to become the person they are today and I wish them each a safe journey into whatever they choose to do with the rest of their lives. They have been given a good education and a tentative road map to follow, so hopefully they will make the most of what lies ahead.

Graduation from high school is one of the most important events in a young person’s life, and the 2016 Naselle-Grays River Valley graduation class has much potential to make our world a better place. This is an early congratulations to each of them.

Westend news:

The Grays River Cafe is now open, and I have to say they have great cheeseburgers and fries. My sister, Diane, and I stopped in on Sunday and checked them out, and as coffee drinkers, we were also impressed with the coffee.

Sandy was the chief cook that afternoon, and Jack was the dishwasher, while we had the pleasure of being served by Amelia. The interior of the cafe has had a nice facelift with new flooring, some interior counter changes, country decor and new curtains embellished with roosters. All in all a very pleasant experience with lots of friendliness.

Ken and Sandy Ruch of Grays River purchased the building recently and are hoping to make it an ongoing family business with the support of the local community. They have more plans in the future to raise the building and add a store, but for now, just the restaurant with a simple menu for breakfast and lunch/dinner meals for reasonable prices. Let’s let them know how much we appreciate their efforts and stop by now and then.

The hours for the cafe are: Thursday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday, 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The Deep River American Legion Post 111 will host its annual Spring Pancake Breakfast this weekend, Saturday, 8-11:30 a.m. Bring your appetite and family and friends for the awesome, all you can eat pancakes with sides of ham or sausage, eggs (the way you want them), coffee, tea and orange juice. Where else can you get this kind of a breakfast with a price of $6 for adults and teens and $4 for kids 3-12 years old?

Raffle tickets will also be on sale throughout the morning but I have no information on the prize. Proceeds from this event will be used in support of local veterans and community youth groups.

The Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park has a new website up and running. For information on what’s happening you can log in to: graysrivervalleycenter.wordpress.com. Coming events will be posted, and you can check out our movie list for the weeks ahead.

The Johnson Park Advisory Board meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 12:30 p.m. for their regular board meetings, and the public is invited to attend.

Some new changes are slowly taking place at the center with the new game room, and a craft room in the works as well. For more information on what is going on there, check out the website or call 360 465-2310.

This week’s movie was released in 2015 and is a docudrama, rated R for language. It is a backstage setting for three product launches and ends in 1998 with the unveiling of the iMac. The story takes us behind the scenes of the digital revolution to paint an intimate portrait of the brilliant man at its epicenter.

A spaghetti dinner will be served prior to the showing this week, beginning at 6:30 p.m. for a suggested donation of $2 per plate. Concessions are also available prior to the show and during the intermission including pop, candy, chips, popcorn and coffee.

Proceeds from the concessions help to defray the cost of the movie license and other expenses for the movie program.

Beginning on June 4, the movie night will be changed from Friday to Saturday at 7 p.m. The first Saturday of each month will be a show appropriate for younger children, and if you have a suggestion or a request please contact Trudy Fredrickson or Tim Virkkala.

The Rosburg Wednesday Senior Lunch Bunch meets every week for a home cooked meal in the Rosburg Hall that is prepared and served by Pat Potter and her volunteers.

On Thursdays a senior meal is also provided and sponsored by CAP, served in the Rosburg Hall as well. Lunches are served at noon on both days.

Happy Birthday to Amy Hunt, Carol Penttila, Marc Gacke, Debbie Lopez, Darian Jacot and Linda Cary.

Happy Anniversary to Shawn and Joni Matthews.
