Learn to evaluate mason bees cocoons

September 8, 2016

On October 8 at 10 a.m., Billie Bevers, Washington State University Master Gardener, will present a workshop on how to harvest mason bees cocoons. During the spring and summer other bees, diseases and parasites can invade mason bee nests.

This two hour session is a “hands on” class to help identify what’s in your mason bee tubes and blocks. If you don’t want to harvest your own bees, but would like the experience and the knowledge, bee tubes and blocks are available.

A discussion will follow about overwintering bees and creating containers for their long sleep.

Bring your questions and a paper bag to carry home your cocoons. Participants will need to bring a box cutter or something similar to cut open their straws. The program, sponsored by Washington State University Extension, will be held at the Cowlitz County Training Center, 1942 First Avenue in Longview. Class registration is $10 (collected at class), limited to 30 people and is due by October 3. For more information or to register, contact Gary Fredricks at 577-3014 Ext 3 or garyf@wsu.edu.
