County, Port 2 review park subsidy

September 29, 2016

Wahkiakum County Commissioners announced their intentions to stop subsidizing County Line Park at a meeting with Port District 2 representatives Sept. 21.

The county had promised and given $3,500 to Port 2 each year to help with the park, with the understanding that the matter could come up for discussion again.

“When we did this we wanted to help get your feet on the ground and get it stabilized,” Commissioner Dan Cothren said. “If you are stable then we would pull out and you can do it on your own revenue sources.”

According to Port 2 Commissioner Lori Scott, County Line Park has brought in $54,945.99 since they took it over. Expenses have added up to $29,315.48, for a profit of $25,630.51.

“We are doing good,” Scott admitted. “This year was slower than the first year due to the fishing.”

Scott said she wanted to talk to the other commissioners at Port 2.

“We kind of expected it to be an ongoing thing,” Scott said.

The commissioners signaled a willingness to continue the discussion, but Commissioner Blair Brady reiterated Cothren’s statement.

“Unless you come up with something that could sway us otherwise,” he said, “it is our intent to discontinue the supplement since you appear to be fiscally sound.”
