Seagulls corral Mules 27-6; Vikes here Friday

September 29, 2016

The Wahkiakum Mule team hit the wall last Friday in a 27-6 loss at Raymond.

The Mules led 6-0 at halftime. In the third quarter, fatigue set in on the short-handed Mules, and the Seagulls took control of the game.

"We have so few players that everyone has to play both ways," Coach Eric Hansen commented. "It's hard to give people a rest. We have to get in better shape.

"We held them to 99 yards in the first half. They had 83 yards in the third quarter, and 173 in the fourth."

Quarterback Luke Brown put the Mules on the scoreboard at 9:56 of the second quarter on a three-yard run. The conversion kick failed.

The lead lasted until third quarter. The Mules couldn't gain a first down on their first possession and had to punt; the Gulls intercepted a pass on the second possession, and it was all down hill from there. Raymond scored on runs of 20 and one yards in the third quarter and 13 and 52 in the fourth.

Zach Brown was the Mules' leading rusher with 52 yards gained; Hank Ferguson picked up 48. Luke Brown completed four of 10 passes, with one interception, for 57 yards. Zach Brown caught two passes for 41 yards; Terris Record caught one for 12 yards, and Ferguson caught one for four yards.

On defense, Ferguson was in on 16 tackles, Casey Wilson 11, Luke Brown and James Anderson nine each, Dylan Ahmed eight, Isaac Moon six, Bryce Good five, Evan Quigley and Cody Terpsma three each, Alexander Merrill two and Record one. Anderson sacked the Gull quarterback one time.

The loss left the Mules 3-1 in non-league play. They host the 1-3 Mossyrock Vikings this Friday in their first River League game.

School district officials have challenge for the game: The game clock on the scoreboard stopped working during last Thursday's middle school game, and they're working to repair or replace it.
