WSDOT starts planning for PI bridge work

October 27, 2016

The Washington Department of Transportation is looking for local input on a coming project to paint and repair the Julia Butler Hansen Bridge between Cathlamet and Puget Island.

WSDOT plans to complete the project during the summer months of 2017 and 2018. One year they will replace the wooden deck, which is rotten in places, and repave the surface. The next year they will repaint the steel structure in order to protect it from rust and corrosion.

There will be periods of time when the bridge will be completely closed, according to Tamara Greenwell, a public information officer for WSDOT.

“We don’t know the times yet,” Greenwell said. “We’re doing the initial phase of asking the community what works best for them so we can come up with a schedule. We will share it as soon as its available.”

In order to ascertain the best times to do the repairs, WSDOT has sent out mailers with surveys.

They’ve also made the survey available online at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/SR409.

“We’ll work with the USPS and local emergency responders to provide early notification of any closures, as well as the community,” Greenwell said. “We recognize that no one likes road closures, so we work to ensure people have as much advanced notification as possible.”
