Wahkiakum County Deputy Sheriff John Mason was one of five people recognized at the Justice and Hope Conference held in Longview last Thursday, October 27, for his response to a domestic violence incident in Wahkiakum County this year.

According to Sheriff Mark Howie, Mason was nominated by a domestic violence advocate for the empathy and compassion he showed to the victim, as well as his willingness to provide resources and support.

"He's got great judgment and a great rapport with people," Howie said.

Mason has been a deputy with the Wahkiakum County Sheriff's Office for three years.

The conference is organized by the Emergency Support Shelter in Longview and is in its 14th year. The event is held to honor, encourage and educate the people and agencies in Cowlitz and Wahkiakum counties who work with individuals affected by domestic violence and sexual assault.
