County still waiting for dredge easements

December 15, 2016

Wahkiakum County commissioners handled a variety of business when they met Tuesday on topics ranging from beach nourishment to weed control.

Commissioner Dan Cothren expressed dissatisfaction with communication with the US Army Corps of Engineers about completion of revised right-of-entry easements. The county is waiting for the Corps to complete revisions to the easements, which land owners must sign to allow dredging crews to work along their shoreline property when depositing dredge sand.

County officials are working to set up a 10-year program in which dredging crews will place sand along eroding shorelines at Cape Horn and East Sunny Sands when sand is available.

Cothren said he had made several attempts to get updates from Corps personnel in the past two weeks and not had a response.

"I'm pretty upset that nobody is replying back," he said. "So I'll work with our congressional people and see if we can get something to happen. I've already contacted them.

"I think we're to the point where we need to go to Portland and have a sit down discussion and talk to them face to face."

In other business:

--Responding to a query from the Grays River Valley Center board of directors, commissioners said they would follow through on a previous commitment to fund the purchase of a cover for the center's gymnasium floor. There is a cover for use for floor protection during non-athletic programs, Cothren said, but it's not in good condition.

"We need to have (Public Works Director) Chuck Beyer look into it," said Commissioner Mike Backman.

--Commissioners made several appointments to county boards: Lee Tischer and Carol Ervest were reappointed to two-year terms to the Marine Resources Committee; Olaf Thomason and Lily Kolditz were reappointed to three-year terms on the Real Property Rights Advisory Board, and Kolditz, Ron McIntire, Gene Healy and Dale Rose were reappointed to four-terms on the county planning commission.

--Commissioners met with county weed control staff and representatives of Consolidated Diking District 1 and the Wahkiakum Conservation Board to discuss how to effect a cooperative program of weed control.
