Wahkiakum's James Anderson tests Naselle's Donny Edwards Saturday in the KM Trophy basketball game. The Mules edged the Comets 52-50.

Several players have had opportunities to shine, but as a whole, the Wahkiakum Mules boys basketball team continued to struggle to find a rhythm. This week they lost two games but beat an old school rival, the Naselle Comets, to retain the KM Trophy.

On Friday, the boys traveled to Toledo and lost 32-53. The Mules were behind by three in the first quarter but watched as the Indians increased their lead first from nine to 16 and finally to 21.

"We were able to keep it close with a great defensive first half but their size and second chance points put the game out of reach in the second half," Coach Todd Souvenir said. "Santos had a good night shooting, going four for nine from behind the arc."

Freshman Santos Wright led the team with 12 points. Luke Brown scored 11. Isaac Moon had three and K.C. Beery, Evan Quigley, and James Cavender added two points each.

On Saturday, Naselle came to town for a rematch. The teams were neck and neck for much of the game and the Comets gave Mule fans a last minute scare.

With 10 seconds left and a three point Mule lead, Evan Quigley was called for a foul. Antonio Nolan scored one from the foul line to bring the Comets one point closer, 49-47.

Three seconds later, Mule player James Anderson was fouled. He made his first foul shot, but missed the second. Luckily for the Mules, Luke Brown was fouled on the rebound. He scored two from the line and brought the score to 52-47. With four seconds left, the Comets took possession of the ball and Nolan made an uncontested three point shot before time ran out.

"Just like the first game we played, sloppy," Souvenir said. "But we were able to come up with the win to keep the KM trophy. We continue to struggle offensively but we had a big night on the boards. Evan Quigley had 15 and Luke Brown had 13 to help us secure the win."

Hank Ferguson fouled Comet Donny Edwards on a fast break.

Brown led the Mules with 17 points. Hank Ferguson and Wright had 12 points each. Quigley scored six points and James Anderson added five more.

Nolan led the Comets with 23 points. Donny Edwards scored 12. Ian Fontanilla and Cole Dorman added five points apiece. Erik Lund had four points and Vince Fauver had one.

On Tuesday, the Mules traveled to Toutle Lake and lost 42-72. The Ducks outscored the Mules 24-8 in the first quarter and never looked back.

"Toutle boys are really good," Souvenir exclaimed. "The Ducks are a very balanced team and can score inside and out from several positions."

Brown led the team with 12 points. Ferguson and Wright had nine points each. Anderson scored five, Quigley had four, and Cavender added three points.

The Mules face Kalama at home tonight (Thursday).
