Rainier defense could do little to stop Peyton Souvenir. She set a new record for a single player scoring in a game at Wahkiakum High School, pouring in 44 points against the Rainier Mountaineers last Thursday.

Last Thursday, Peyton Souvenir set the new record at Wahkiakum High School for most points scored by a single player in a basketball game, boys or girls. She not only beat the record of 41, set by Michelle Thomas in 1985, she topped Cody Olsen's 43 points against Clatskanie in 2010.

Souvenir scored 44 points, pulled down 10 rebounds, had nine assists, and six steals in the Lady Mules game against Rainier. The Lady Mules won 93-14.

Souvenir could have done more damage, but by all accounts, that's not her nature. Plus the Lady Mules were up by more than 70 points when Coach Rob Garrett took her out of the game. It was time to let the bench get some more minutes on the floor.

Macie Elliott added 15 points, six rebounds, seven steals, and five assists. Savannah Burdick scored 11 points. Charlie Ashe had 10 points and four steals. Maddy Mace had seven points and four steals. Ellie Leitz scored four points and had 10 rebounds and one block. Sydney Hansen had two points and one block.

"I couldn't be happier with our performance tonight," Coach Rob Garrett said. "I've really been challenging the girls to play four quarters of great defense and I thought we did that tonight. I thought everyone played great 'D' but Savannah (Burdick), Sydney (Hansen), and Maddy (Mace) really stepped up their game on the defensive end.

"That gave us a ton of energy on offense. Not to mention our great crowd. Offensively I thought we were extremely efficient. Peyton (Souvenir) obviously led the way scoring 44 points on 16 of 28 from the floor and seven for nine from the line.

"It's pretty cool when you have a kid that is so unselfish that she was waiting for a teammate to tell her to go for the record," Garrett added. "Once that happened, Peyton's response was still no, but when it's your night, it's your night. Then to have the group of girls around her that she does makes it all the more fun. The team couldn't be happier. Breaking a record that has stood since 1985 is no easy task."

"We did some good things tonight at times," Coach Garrett said. "I thought we let Napavine control the pace late in the game and that hurt us. Sydney (Hansen) stepped up huge and had a great game at both ends of the court. When everybody on the court plays with confidence we're hard to stop and when they don't we make it easy to pay defense on us."
