White Tail Run takes place this Saturday

Skamokawa News

SO-SO--This past weekend was Mother's Day weekend and I hope everyone had an enjoyable time in spite of some of the weather we had. We seemed to take turns between sun breaks and rain showers, some of which were quite heavy, so it really depended on where you were as to how wet you got or how much sun you enjoyed. By the time you read this, we are supposed to be enjoying some sunshine, so I hope that forecast is correct!

BEING READY--Speaking of the nice weather, we are being told it could be getting warmer every day and be over 80 degrees by next Monday, so if that's the case, there are some precautions that need to be taken. Be smart and lather up with SPF 30 or higher lotion, and keep your time in the sun very limited. Wearing hats, staying in the shade and wearing light, long sleeved tops might be wise.

Also, if it gets hot, it's time to watch for children or pets left in vehicles, as no matter how many times it's been said, there are still those who can't seem to get it through their heads that animals should not be left in hot cars, anymore than a child should be. If you see an animal or a child alone in a car, be sure to call authorities (911) immediately, and use your phone/camera to record the situation in case you choose to break a window, as sadly, you could be held liable for damages.

SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating their birthdays from May 18-24 are Betty Koziel, Tayler Stornetta, Bryson Havens, Jon Peterson, Julie McKinley, Mike Phelps, Courtney Helms, Kris Parke, Tina Vincent, Donna Moody, Lois Nelson, Mary Jodi McClain, Mitch Moonen, Bonnie Bigler, Natalie Emery, Bill Faubion, Travis Heagy, Kevin Wirkkala, Klarah Sause, Nathaniel Danker, Michelle Thomas Fladebo, Doris Takko, Rian Blain, Lainie Ferguson, Brenda Ferguson, Deanna Healy Ahrndt, Donna Healy Palmer, Mary Jo Brown, Katrina Pedersen Freeman and Brandon Chamberlain. Happy Birthday everybody!

Those celebrating anniversaries this week are Mr and Mrs. Shawn Deal, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Faubion, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Cochran and Mr. and Mrs. Tony Danker. May you all have wonderful anniversary celebrations!

FRIDAY MOVIE--This Friday night, May 19, the Community Center in Cathlamet will offer a free movie. It is an adult, R rated drama, so all you grown ups can bring your snacks, or order a pizza from Sharon's (795-3311) ahead of time, and have dinner there if you so wish. There is free popcorn available if you're just wanting a little free snack to go with the free movie. Movies start at 7 p.m., and if you order a pizza, it will be delivered about 6:45.

RUN THIS SATURDAY--Coming up this Saturday, May 20, it's time for the annual Great White-Tail Run sponsored by the Wahkiakum 4-H organization, so get out those walking/running shoes, and join in the fun! You need to check in and register at Skamokawa Vista Park, where you have several options as to how far you want to run, (10 K, 5K or 2 miles) so be there for the 8:30 a.m. registration time, and be ready to go by 10 a.m. For more information, call 360-795-3278.

NEW EXHIBIT--I know it was a busy weekend with Mother's Day and all, so you may not have been able to get to Redmen Hall to see the latest exhibit in the Interpretive Center, so here's hoping you get to check it out this week. The hall is open Thursday through Sunday from noon to four, and the new exhibit is entitled, "The Wonderful Women of Wahkiakum County." This exhibit showcases the works of four different groups of women in this area, and it's hoped you'll come and check out the spinning, the weaving, the beading, the quilt making and more from all of these talented ladies. If you'd like more information, call 795-3007.

BERRIES FOR SALE--Once again, the Lions Club is selling tubs of strawberries, but these are fresh, not frozen. They are sliced, do not contain any sugar, and are ready to use. In the June 1 edition of this paper, there will be an order form that will give you all the details, and these forms will also be found in businesses around Cathlamet and Skamokawa. The deadline for ordering them will be June 24. Here's hoping you'll help support the Lions Club.

BREAKFAST AT CHURCH--The members of the Skamokawa United Methodist Church would like to invite you to their annual breakfast prior to the Dollars for Scholars car show on June 3. Pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs and biscuits with sausage gravy will be served from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. It's a good start to the day, so you'll have some extra energy to walk about all the cars and fairgrounds area after that wonderful breakfast, and then you'll be all ready for lunch later on that will be served by the Wahkiakum Dollars for Scholars organization.

COFFEE TRAILER--The Ship Channel Coffee trailer at Skamokawa Vista Park is now owned and operated by Port District 2 and is open seven days a week for all of your espresso and smoothie needs! They have other beverages and things as well, so why not stop by and check it out and see their full menu? Needless to say, if you're a Skamokawa resident that just can't survive without that jolt of espresso, you won't have to go far to get it now! I was told they are open at 7 a.m. every day except Sunday, and on that day only, it opens a half hour later, at 7:30 and they close at 2 p.m.

TRAVELERS--It's been a traveling time for some of my friends and relatives lately, and from what I can gather, they all had marvelous trips. Former resident Frank Corbin and his wife, Beth, finally got to go on their long awaited trip to Israel. They have been to a lot of places that one reads about in the Bible, and which they had always wanted to visit, so we're glad they got to take a boat ride on the Sea of Galilea and swim in the Dead Sea. Ron and Annette (Healy) Miller were traveling in Europe and were thoroughly enjoying the sights along with some wonderful weather while they were in London. Larri and Sally Palmer traveled to many places in Spain and France recently and from castles, to trains and a ton of good food, they seemed to really have had a splendid time! Pete and Katie Sechler headed to the Southeast, to celebrate Pete's birthday, as they enjoyed New Orleans, a drive through Mississippi, before staying at a gorgeous resort on the beaches in Alabama. The views were spectacular and the warmth from the sun was a nice change from the cold and wet Pacific Northwest! Jeff Nicols and Cindi Pedersen enjoyed traveling from their home in Oregon, to the eastern part of Washington as they took in several wineries there, which included the city of Walla Walla.

67'ERS--Just a little reminder to those in the class of 1967: There will be a meeting at the Masthead in Longview on May 27 at 1 p.m., so we hope you can join us. We'll be enjoying lunch, celebrating classmate Linda Holland Toste's birthday and making plans for our 50th reunion.

CONGRATULATIONS--Dale Jacobson was happy to announce the news about his oldest daughter, Rachel Sautter, as she is now a "teacher of your children"! Rachel is now sporting the letters, BS, MPH, CCRP behind her name and will be teaching at the Portland Community Foundation of Clinical Research. So, a hearty congratulations to her and to her Dad, who is very proud of his daughter's accomplishments.

DOING GREAT--Morgan Spieth is making her folks pretty doggone proud, as she just broke a Sacramento State record for having the most homeruns in the school's history by a freshman, with her 10th homerun recently. Morgan plays baseball for the Sacramento State Hornets and not only is her team and school happy with her performance but her folks, Linda (Palmer) and Larry Spieth are certainly proud as well. Congrats Morgan!

DID IT AGAIN--We must send our heartiest congratulations to former Wahkiakum County resident, Laurie Miller, as once again, she was chosen to sing the National Anthem at this year's Washington State Fair in Puyallup. There were well over 300 entries and Laurie was one of 19 chosen to sing during this event, which opens one of the major acts during the fair. We're hoping she gets her wish and gets to sing prior to one of her favorite groups, so we'll be keeping our fingers crossed. Way to go Laurie; we knew you could do it!

RODS AND REELS--Tomorrow, May 19, is the deadline for those who want to get all the perks that an early entry brings you, like the t-shirt and goodie bag, so I'm hoping you've gotten yours into Lee Tischer for the upcoming Dollars for Scholars Rod and Reel Run, to be held on June 3. You can call Lee ASAP and he can probably set you up, but you'll have to do so immediately, 360-430-4377.

GREAT SPONSOR--Speaking of the car show, I am so happy to have some great donations from some terrific people, and one of them who doesn't get mentioned very often is Mike Swift. Mike is not only a wonderful artist but a wonderful contributor to the Wahkiakum Dollars for Scholars car show, as he is a $300 dollar sponsor to the cause and is donating multiple prints to WDFS to give away as prizes, and his work is always well received by those lucky enough to win one. Mike operates "Mike Swift's Fine Arts" and is one of those wonderful artists who supports us, as well as the Tsuga Gallery in Cathlamet, where his work is on display. Thanks for all your donations over the years Mike!

NOT LONG--The Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds will be quite busy as the days are flying by and we get closer to the Silver Buckle Series, with the first part of it being held on June 24. Then the following month will be the newest event to be held there, "Challenge of the Champions" which, if you haven't heard, is all about bull riding and all that kind of excitement to be held on July 14. Then on July 22, the second part of the Silver Buckle Series will take place, with the last one taking place during fair time, which is August 17-19 and the last day is the final day of the Silver Buckle Series, so between the flea market, cleaning days (May 20) and more, it's going to be a busy time down here in Skamokawa!
