The Wahkiakum Mule football team journeyed to Naselle last Friday with one goal in mind: To return to Cathlamet with the KM Trophy, the grand prize when the Mules and Naselle Comets meet.

The Comets took an 8-0 first quarter lead, but the Mules did the rest of the scoring to claim a 22-8 victory.

After throwing five incomplete passes, Comet quarterback Cole Dorman connected with Donny Edwards who beat a defender for a 22-yard touchdown play with 1:12 left in the first quarter. Dorman ran the conversion for an 8-0 Comet lead.

The Mules tied the game at the start of the second quarter, with Lucas Brown passing to James Anderson for an eight-yard touchdown play. Brown passed to KC Beery for the conversion and game tying points.

At 5:12 of the third quarter, Brown scored on a one-yard run to put the Mules ahead. Anderson picked up the conversion for a 16-8 Mule lead.

The Mules closed the scoring early in the fourth quarter as Zach Brown scored from one yard outside the endzone. The conversion failed, leaving the score 22-8.

The Mules gained 201 yards rushing and 136 yards passing.

Anderson led the runners with 84 yards; Chance Cothren had 51, Zach Brown 48, and Lucas Brown 18. Lucas Brown completed 12 of 19 passes for 136 yards, with one interception and one touchdown. Anderson caught seven passes for 79 yards and the touchdown; Zach Brown caught two passes for 31 yards; Evan Quigley had for two catches for 23 yards, and Isaac Moon one for four yards.

On defense, Zach Brown took part in 15 tackles; Lucas Brown had 11, Quigley and Anderson 10 each, Santos Wright eight, and Chance Cothren six. Wright and Cothren intercepted passes, and Quigley and Anderson recovered fumbles.

The Comets gained 67 yards on the ground and 187 yards in the air.

Dorman was the leading rusher with 40 yards; Oggie Lopez gained 15, and Erik Lund and Fa'aoso Tutu'u each gained nine yards. Dorman completed 15 of 23 passes for 187 yards and one touchdown, with two interceptions. Edwards caught four passes for 105 yards and one touchdown. Lund and Antonio Nolan each had two receptions; and Ethan Lindstrom had one.

Vince Fauver led the Comet defense with 15 tackles; Gabe Gilbert made 10, Lopez and Edwards eight each, Lund seven Nolan six, and Jimmy Strange four. Edwards intercepted a Mule pass.

The Comets entertain Rainier Christian this Friday.

The Mules are also at home, entertaining the Ocosta Wildcats.
