Westend News:

The annual Chicken Dinner sponsored by the Rosburg Community Club is being held on March 18 in the Rosburg Community Hall from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. This event is one of their biggest fund raisers and is always one of the tastiest luncheons of the year. Bring the whole family and enjoy home cooked chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, their famous salad bar and the even more famous desserts.

Tickets can be purchased at the door. Adults and teens $10, 6 to 12 years $5, and 3 to 6 years $3.

The Rosburg Community Club is probably one of the oldest organizations in our community, and they do incredible things in our community. They provide scholarships for students, they take care of the Rosburg Cemetery and they are responsible for the upkeep of the Rosburg Hall itself. That said, the membership has dwindled to just a few, and they could use some young and strong bodies to help out. If you are interested in joining their group, give Barbara Rose or Sonja Kruse a call. They would welcome some new members.

The next blood drive at the Valley Bible Church is approaching. It will take place on April 10 from noon to 6 p.m. Make your appointments now by going to redcrossblood.org, then type in valleybiblechurch or you can call Susan Burkhalter at 465-2264.

Don’t wait until you or someone you love needs a transfusion, make the effort to give this life saving donation. It only takes a few minutes of your time and it could mean the rest of a lifetime for someone else.

The church is located at 4723 SR 4 West in Rosburg. April Zimmerman will once again provide her delicious sliders as a snack.

The West End Food Pantry is currently looking to recruit some new members on their board of directors. If you would like to help out and make a difference in our community please contact Shonda or Suzie at the pantry on Thursdays 11-5 p.m., or pick up an application from the bulletin board outside the pantry. They are also still looking for one or two volunteers to help out at the pantry one or more Thursday afternoons per month. If you’re interested please contact them. The phone number for the pantry is 465-2344. Students are are also welcome and encouraged as any hours worked can be counted as community service hours.

Have you ever wondered just what our sheriff’s office, and our justice system is really all about? Here’s your chance to find out with a hands on class, free to the public and open to Wahkiakum County residents, 18 years and older. Wahkiakum County Sheriff’s Office Citizens’ Police Academy 2018 is an eight-week commitment, one evening a week beginning on March 23 and every Friday after that for completion of the course.

You can pick up an application in the library at Johnson Park. Space is limited so don’t wait. A criminal history and warrant check will be conducted on all applicants

The curriculum will give an overview of operations in the Sheriff’s office, classes on criminal and civil law, 911 communications, police procedures, jail operations, search and rescue, crime prevention, domestic violence, child abuse and neglect, emergency services, school violence, narcotics and alcohol abuse, and the adult/juvenile court systems. There will also be two field trips: to the Sheriff’s office Communications Center and jail as well as a trip to the firing range. There will be a graduation ceremony when the class is concluded.

The class will be held in Cathlamet in the River Street Building at 25 River Street from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Notebooks and other class materials will be provided. For those on the westend, Wahkiakum On The Move will be available to transport those interested in the service.

Happy Birthday to the following: Daniel Forbes, Darlene Bjornsgard, Amber Parker, Ben Gross and Thomas Holt. Here’s to a perfect day.

Happy Anniversary to Carson and Amanda Engelson and Bob and Annette Bowker. Wishing you many more celebrations together.

I will be away from my computers for the next two weeks so I won’t have a column. I will be going to southern California to visit with two of my nephews and their families and will be attending the Nascar race in Fontana with them. It looks like this will become an annual trip. A gift from my nephew and niece. For a Nascar fan, it’s pretty special.
