Not only does the Appelo Archive Center in Naselle have a new director, Kelly Shumar, but the Archives Cafe is also open Tuesday through Friday at 10 a.m. with Tiffany Coop at the helm. The menu will be simple at first, with soup and sandwiches (home made), but other offerings will come as the business grows. The cafe brings revenue into the Archive Center as well as being a local place to have a wholesome lunch. Let’s do what we can to keep them going, and have another local business to support.

My sister and a few friends took the opportunity to attend Naselle luncheon/craft/plant and bake sale last Saturday, and as a first timer, it was amazing. The luncheon salads were abundant and delicious. There were lots of plant starts for the gardeners (not for me with my black thumb), wonderful baked goodies and gorgeous quilts (yes, I came home with goodies and a lovely quilt). This group works all year to put these fund raisers together, and an admirable job they do to provide help for missions. Thank you to each and every one of you for a job well done, and I will definitely be back next year.

Westend news:

How about some good old fashioned bull riding in our little county? The Wahkiakum County Fair Foundation will host a live auction and Mexican dinner at the fairgrounds this Saturday. That’s this weekend. This event is a fund raiser in support of the Challenge of Champions Pro Bull Riding Exhibition which has been scheduled for July 20.

The Youth Building at the Wahkiakum Fairgrounds in Skamokawa will be open at 4:30 p.m. for the live auction preview, silent auction and dinner at 5 p.m., with Brian McClain as the auctioneer. The dinner menu will include enchiladas and a taco bar, for a donation. Let’s get on board with this hard working, determined group, and bring something new and exciting to our community.

The Grays River Habitat Enhancement District, our local oversight group with regard to river issues, will hold its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday in the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park at 5:15 p.m. These meetings are public, and landowners are encouraged to attend. With interest from other groups regarding a long term plan for the river, it would be of some help to the GRHED commissioners if the community were attending their regular meetings and giving them some input and ideas.

The West End Food Pantry has lots to offer, over and above a helping hand with groceries for your family. Every other week a representative of The Charlotte House has been attending the food bank in Rosburg, located in the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park, to be available to answer questions about service and/or to give referrals. They also held their first legal clinic at that location earlier this month, and it was well attended. The legal clinic, with an attorney from Northwest Justice, will be held quarterly. The next clinic will be held on July 13. If you have legal issues, this is your opportunity to get some answers from an expert.

Speaking of the food pantry, I neglected to get info in my column about their Peanut Butter and Jelly Campaign last month. It’s not too late. With summer coming, what could be easier and healthier than sandwiches for lunch. If you are out shopping, grab an extra jar of peanut butter and one of jelly and bring it up to the the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park to donate. Other items they can always use, and are easy meals for the summer, include canned meats, canned raviolis, boxed cereals, juices, etc. The pantry is open on Thursdays, 1-5 p.m.

Happy Birthday to the following: Karl Smith, Emily Lindstrom, Lonnie Eaton, Jonathon Bates, Keith M. Fauver, Joe Barnes, Berniece Helton, Carol Haven, Marilee Wirkkala, Parker Kilponen, Renae Colombo and Carol Harley. Wishing all of you a wonderful celebration.

Happy Anniversary to Nate and Holly Engelson, Mike and Diane Matthews, Randy and Vicki Wirkkala and Bert and Carol Haven. Congratulations.
