Congratulations to the Naselle baseball team for taking the District Championship.

Sports calendar for the Naselle Comet teams this week: today (Thursday), possible playoff game at Quilicene at 4 p.m. if winning game yesterday (Wednesday); Saturday, baseball Regional Playoffs at Winlock, against Colton at 1 p.m .; fastpitch- possible playoff game at Montesano. Go Comets!

One of the biggest events of the school year in the Naselle school’s music department is the annual Spring Concert which will be held on May 30 at 6:00 p.m. All grade levels from kindergarten to 12th grade are involved in this event. Come and join in the fun, listen to some great music and understand that these students have put in many, many hours of practice to bring us this production. Bring the family.

Last week I mentioned some changes being made at the Appelo Archives Center and the Cafe. Here is an update of their new hours of operation. The museum will be open to the public Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The cafe will be open Wednesday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Come on in and check them out. I have, and their soup and sandwich special is a real bargain. I think they also do take-out. Their number is 360 484-7103.

Westend news

Every year at this time the Wahkiakum County Extension group hosts the Great White Tail Run which benefits our Wahkiakum County 4-H groups. This year will be the 34th run which will take place this Saturday, the 19th on the Julia Butler Hansen Refuge located in Skamokawa, with sign-in at 8:30 a.m. The race begins at 10 a.m.

The event includes 10K, 5K and 2 mile courses with recognition for overall male and female winner in each distance and ribbons for the top three finishers in each age division.

If you wish to compete with your dog, official dog rules: Socialized dogs only. Dogs should be at least 6 months old with current vaccinations. Dogs must be on leash at all times and stay on designated course. Female dogs in season are not permitted.

The "Stamp Out Hunger" Food Drive last Saturday was successful but the summer is long for those families without many resources. I noticed that the drop box is still available in the Grays River Post Office so if you have extra non perishable food items on hand, feel free to drop them in the box at the post office or at the West End Food Pantry.

The West End Food Pantry is open on Thursdays in the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park 1-5 p.m.

The American Legion Deep River Post #111 will host its annual Memorial Day Breakfast on May 26, 8-11 a.m. in a new location, the Rosburg Community Hall in Rosburg. Honoring our veterans, and our military men and women, this breakfast supports local veterans, the community and youth groups.

Bring the family for a delicious meal with all you can eat pancakes with a side of ham or sausage and eggs fixed the way you like them, and coffee, orange juice or milk. The price is adults and teens: $6 and children 3 to 12 $4.

Put on your best pioneer outfit and join the ladies of the Grays River Methodist Church on “The Oregon Trail” as they host their 16th Annual Spring Tea & Luncheon in the Rosburg Community Hall on May 20. Enjoy a complete lunch with music and stories of courageous women of the Oregon Territory as your entertainment. The “Pick Your Own Prize Raffle” and a silent auction is always fun with proceeds going to the West End Food Pantry. Raffle tickets are $1 each and there is a suggested donation at the door of $8 per person.

The doors will open at 11:30 a.m., giving you a chance to check out exhibits that may have been used on the wagon trails. Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. Join in the fun for a good cause. For more information call 360-465-2240 or 360-484-7749.

Get out those musical instruments, tune up that singing voice and head on over to the Skamokawa Grange #425 on Saturday for the May Open Mic-Afternoon of Music. Sign up to participate at 2:45 p.m., and open mic starts at 3 p.m. You can also opt to just sit and enjoy the show. A jam session will follow and the coffee is always on. Donations are appreciated and benefit the Grange. For more info call Jerry Ledtke at 795-3434.

How ‘bout a neat way to get out of cleaning and slicing strawberries for your yearly pies, jams and jellies, shortcake, etc. The Wahkiakum Lions Club is offering locally grown, fresh, cleaned and sliced strawberries with no sugar added and ready to preserve. 14 pounds (1 3/4 gallons) are $29.00 and the 28 pound economy size (3 1/2 gallons) is $49.00. Orders must be paid in advance. The final order date is June 9 and orders must be picked up on June 16 at 10 a.m. at your selected pick up point, Rosburg Store, Wahkiakum High School parking lot or Skamokawa Grange parking lot. This will be my last column for a while written from home, as I will be in California for about a month to attend graduations for three of my grandchildren; one from Chico State College with a math degree, and a grandson and granddaughter from high school. This Grammie is very proud of these three awesome kids.

Enjoy our lovely weather here for the next few weeks and I will be thinking about how nice it would be to be here, but for family I will put up with the traffic, sirens, people and hot weather.
