Francis Marie Phillips Hauge
Marie Hauge, 79 years of age, passed away on her half birthday, April 19, 2008.  She was born on October 19, 1928 in Spokane, Washington to Ward and Verona Phillips of Lind, Washington where she lived until age 10 when she moved with her widowed mother, brother and two sisters to Coeur d’Alene Idaho.  Marie spent her high school years boarding at Castilleja Girls School in Palo Alto, California where she graduated in 1946 as the valedictorian of her class.  She then attended Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York until 1949, later transferring to Gonzaga University, where she was baptized in the Catholic Church at the age of 21.
In 1951 she moved to the East Coast to be near her hospitalized brother. Her love affair with art which began at Vassar motivated her to enroll in art school at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C.  The Korean War was in progress, and she became reacquainted with Arthur Lyddon Hauge of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, a Naval Officer stationed in Bayonne, New Jersey, who contacted her  in order to visit his ailing friend, her older brother.  A whirlwind romance ensued and within three weeks, on March 10, 1952, they embarked on a marriage that lasted 56 years and produced eight children.
In 1955, Marie encouraged her husband who had completed several years of graduate studies in Business Administration to pursue his dream of becoming a doctor. She was often known to say that the only thing she wasn’t willing to sacrifice was having children
During their eventful life together, Art and Marie lived in San Diego, California, Portland, Oregon, St. Ignatius Montana, Hillsboro, Oregon, Vancouver, Washington, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and finally retired on Puget Island near Cathlamet, Washington.  At the age of 60, Marie completed her B.A. studying Art at Gonzaga University in Florence, Italy.  She received her degree from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, and continued independent doctoral studies, working on a PhD in Educational Leadership in Art until she passed away in April.
Next to her deep faith in God, and love for her husband and children, Marie’s great passion was art.  She received the Educational Leadership Award from Gonzaga University’s School of Education for the art enrichment program she developed called “Art HAS It,”  (Art History Appreciation and Service), which gives children and adults access to their cultural heritage through reproductions of masterpieces from the great museums of the world.  Through Art HAS It, Marie created university, corporate and museum partnerships, so that participants in the program could be exposed to collections of hundreds of important works of art in an inspiring and non-threatening manner. While having the opportunity to view and interact with large-scale reproductions, participants create their own “art collections” of postcard-sized reproductions (often donated by museums) to share with their communities.    Once the seed of enthusiasm is planted, many of the programs become self-sustaining, and expand their scope and curriculum in a flexible manner.  The beauty of the program is in its simplicity; no sophisticated background in Art is needed to implement or participate; the premise is that our eyes are the critics that inform us of what we find aesthetically pleasing, therefore, WE are the Art experts. When teachers, students and community members experience Art Has It hands-on, they are hooked.  Marie had pictures of former students, many of them from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, who had started collecting portfolios of masterpieces in preschool and had made it to national museums to see the originals of their favorite works of art.  Her motto was “Bring the museums of the world to the children, and the children to the museums.”
The Art HAS It program is now  used in preschools, elementary and secondary schools, as well as universities. Merle A. Cowan
Merle A. Cowan, 91, born in Glentana, Montana on March 5, 1917 passed away at Lodge II-Roolan nursing facility in Lacey, Washington April 22, 2008. She is survived by three of her four children, Bonnie Bourgault (Paul) of Olympia; Joel Watters (Coralie) of Shelton and N. Bradley Cowan (Melody) of Astoria, Oregon. Son Clifford Watters (Charlotte) passed away in 2001. She is also survived by her step-children, Connie Adams (Gordon) of Shelton, Bruce Cowan (Karen) of Union and Bette Morton (Mike) of LaCenter. Step-daughter Sally Stacy (Don) passed away in December of 2006.
Merle was raised in Glasgow, Montana where her Norwegian mother owned and operated the Savoy Hotel. Merle's father died when she was only five months old. Her mother raised four girls under the harshest of circumstances and passed on to her daughter her business skills as well as her excellent home making skills. Merle was an outstanding breadmaker and produced fine "fancy" work cherished by her grandchildren.
Her greatest success was working with her beloved Norman (passed on in 1998) for 30 years dairying on Puget Island, Cathlamet, Washington.
Even without high school graduation, her English skills and cursive writing were outstanding. From childhood through later life she could recite Bible verses and poetry and song easily. As a single mother in 1953 she began work at the Shelton Mason County Journal and became an exceptional proof reader and classified ads manager. She gave that up when she and Norman were married on August 17, 1957.
The team of Merle and Norman got started in Shelton in 1957. After Brad was born they both yearned to farm and found a great location near Welcome Slough on West Sunny Sands on the Columbia. Retiring in the late 80s, they designed and built their retirement home outside the dike. As dairy farmers they were steady, strong and always there, just like the great river flowing past the farm. Today Brad and Melody and their children carry on the tradition in Astoria, Oregon milking over 900 cows as owner/members of Tillamook.
Merle and Norman read and studied the Bible together on a regular basis. They hosted Bible studies at their home. In this small community there were many changes over the years and Merle and Norman saw to it that the new clergy and their families were always welcome and secure.
A memorial service will be held at Cathlamet Community Fellowship Church (the old Grange Hall) on Puget Island on Saturday May 31, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Merle's name to Safeplace, PO Box 2002, Olympia, WA 98507-2002 or a charity of your choice. Arrangements by Mills and Mills of Tumwater.

Mary Lou Bussone-Luethe
Mary Lou Bussone-Luethe, 57, passed away peacefully on April 26, 2008 at her residence in Long Beach, Washington. Mary was born in Longview, WA on September 3, 1950. Her parents Albert and Eugenia Bussone raised her in Cathlamet where she attended Julius Wendt grade school through eighth grade.
She moved with her family to the Long Beach Peninsula where she attended Ilwaco High School. Mary was active as a cheerleader during her sophomore, junior and senior years. In 1968, she was proud to be Worthy Advisor for Rainbow Girls. Following graduation in 1969 Mary attended Western Business University. Following graduation she returned to Long Beach where she worked at the original Bank of Commerce which later became Rainier Bank. Later she was employed at two local attorney offices, sold real estate and ended her working career after 13 years at Fibre Federal Credit Union in Longview where she was supervisor of the VISA and share draft department.
Mary met Gary Luethe in Long Beach and they wed on February 14, 1976. Mary helped raise Gary's children Paul and Evelyn and Mary was often the mom who hosted pizza parties and overnight stays. Mary and Gary parted ways in 1984 and were later blessed to reunite and remarry on February 14, 1998.
Mary had a natural magnetism because of her internal and external beauty. Friends were attracted to her generosity and affable nature and always found her company uplifting. The consummate entertainer, she loved hosting parties on the 4th of July and Christmas season. Razor clam digging, fishing in fair weather, reading with children in local schools and working on her computer were favorite endeavors. Once retired she relished traveling with Gary to Kauai, Mexico, various statewide destinations, England, France and the country of her heritage, Italy.
Cats were dear to her heart and her recent buddies Classy and Lucky Lady graced her home and provided much comfort. Pictures galore demonstrate their cute antics and Mary's devotion.
As an Ilwaco High School graduate Mary donated countless hours to her school. She pressed hard to make the I.H.S. Alumni Donor Campaign successful, helped with the annual alumni picnic and was an inspirational Ocean Beach Education Foundation board director.
Martha Murfin was Mary's role model and Mary supported many of Martha's causes for the community's needy children and families. At Christmas time Mary began a women's evening fundraiser. Mary also provided donations to Martha to buy toys and food for families without resources. Mary's friends will carry on this annual event in her honor.
A keynote speaker for the 2007 Relay for Life, a cancer fundraiser, Mary spoke eloquently of her diagnosis of breast cancer in January 1998 and the second occurrence in 2003. She encouraged all to fight for early diagnosis and treatment. Her words still resonate throughout the community.

Also surviving are her mother, Eugenia Bussone; sisters Sue Ann Bussone-Johnson and Sandra Rodal; brother Edward Bussone; nieces Michelle White, Kristen Page, Emilee Bussone-Williams and Karri Boyd; nephews Nathan Stewart and James Rodman; great-nieces Lindsey Hawkins, Ashley Wade and Madalyn Winingham; and great-nephews Mason Boyd and Kyler Hawkins-Phillips.
