  • Ralph Rodahl's golfing vision lives on

    Diana Zimmerman, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 29, 2014

Ralph Rodahl died June 1, 1997. Planners had so underestimated the man and his impact on the community that they held the service in a crowded space at Dowling Funeral Home. Outside in the warm sun that day, many waited to honor him and express their condolences to his family, wife Juanita, and children Randy and Kim. Rodahl was a generous and kind man and it was his vision that gave this small town a golf course. He graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 1939, and two of his track and field...

  • New Skamokawa creamery turns out the cheese

    Diana Zimmerman, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 29, 2014

Things are moving along at the Skamokawa Farmstead Creamery. Vicki Allenback and Kyleen Austin have their license now and have begun to sell cheese at the local farmer’s market, which had its opening day on Friday. The dream began a couple years back, when Allenback was still looking to repurpose the fields that had gone fallow on her property just west of Skamokawa. She had begun to build a barn, but she didn’t have a plan. “I’d wanted to do a dairy here for about a year and a half,” Allenback...

    Diana Zimmerman, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 29, 2014

Local resident Ginni Callahan used to spend half the year here in Wahkiakum county, but lately the world has been calling and her sojourns have grown shorter. “I’ve had opportunities to live other places,” she’ll tell you, “but this place keeps pulling me back. Here and Mexico. It’s a nice migratory pattern. Those birds and whales can’t be wrong.” A kayak guide, Callahan is a five star sea leader in the British Canoe Union and a level four coach who grew up in an active family on the east coa...

    Diana Zimmerman, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 28, 2014

Jim Roberts and his wife, Sally, haven’t lived in Wahkiakum County all that long, but they love the place and particularly the local music so much that Jim promotes it on the radio. Roberts is almost 71 and a self-professed independent cuss. He grew up in Clark County, graduated from high school and joined the Marine Corps that same year, but was out before Vietnam. “I just rattled around for a while,” Roberts said. “I kind of dropped out. I had a lot of odd jobs and some were odder than others....

    Diana Zimmerman, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 28, 2014

Eric Hansen, Wahkiakum High School football coach and teacher at John Thomas Middle School, isn’t exactly sure how long ago it was that local veteran Bob Roche approached him about having students mark the gravestones of local veterans with flags at Greenwood Cemetery for Veterans Day and Memorial Day. “I don’t know if this is the sixth or seventh year,” Hansen said. “It could be eight.” Regardless, it’s been a good experience for the first period class on the chosen day. Usually it’s an eight...

Several community members showed up to support the high school golf team at last Thursday’s Wahkiakum School District Board of Director’s meeting after hearing that the school sponsored sport was up for review. This year the Mules baseball team would have had to cancel their season if the school had been unable to get league permission to allow eighth grade boys to turn out for the team. With enrollment on the decline and fewer students showing interest in athletics, the school board has to con...

It was the recent loss of a fellow veteran, Gary Huber that spurred members into action this year. “Gary had been talking about the memorial again,” VFW Commander Danny Eaton said, “so we formed a committee.” The memorial is dedicated to all the local men and women who have served in the Armed Forces. • Layton Elliott: Music without limits

    Diana Zimmerman, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 7, 2014

His youthful appearance and quiet soft spoken manner belie local musician Layton Elliott’s nearly six decades on this planet, his gravelly baritone and mean guitar skills. Elliott really wanted a drum set when he was a young teen. What he got was a guitar from Montgomery Ward. Disappointment quickly turned to fascination. “I remember playing all day long,” Elliott said, “just to learn how to play. I had deep grooves in the ends of my fingers. When they started to bleed, I wrapped them with wh...
