Last Saturday morning, the Wahkiakum Mules men’s wrestling team returned the District tournament Traveling Trophy to the announcer's stand. The team had been its steward since last February and was seeking to extend that period of possession. The Mules brought 12 men, ready for war, at 10 of the 14 weight classes. Twice a year the Mule wrestlers take on the weather and the roads to head east of the mountains and test the eastern competition. This year's first trip was to Pomeroy. The weekend started with mix and matches on Friday night verses various eastern schools. Then Saturday morning, the Pomeroy tournament started with schools from Idaho and Oregon also in attendance as well as some perennial powerhouses such as Kittitas. The Wahkiakum Mule wrestling team capped a successful season by their highest ever placing in the state Mat Classic Wrestling Tournament. The Mules placed 10th in team standings, and senior Blayne Edwards won his second state championship. Competition started on Friday with six Mules wrestling. The Wahkiakum Mules wrestling team has begun post season performances with a powerful presentation at the sub-regional tournament. At tournament time the competition is divided by gender, with the men’s and women’s competitions taking place in separate locations. The Mules came into the weekend with 12 wrestlers able to compete at Ocasta in the men’s brackets. In wrestling, it is the last 10 matches of the year that matter most. The beginning of the season can be great or abysmal, but what really matters is the wrestlers performance at subs, regionals and the state tournament. On Sunday, the Mules Wrestling Team celebrated their end of the year banquet and award ceremony. Wrestlers of all ages from six-year-old Paul Stacey to Wahkiakum High School Senior Ben Miles attended. Youth Coach Paul Johns handed out awards and congratulated all of the youth wrestlers on their great season.
