Wintery temperatures are on the horizon and it looks like we need to make sure our vehicles are protected with antifreeze, our pet’s water bowls are in a place where they won’t freeze, and our hoses and water pipes are protected from the low freezing temperatures. It probably wouldn’t hurt to check on any of your neighbors who might need a hand with some of these tasks, before it’s too late. We all seem to have at least one neighbor/friend who could do with an extra hand but probably wouldn’t ask. Just sayin’ News from Naselle: The sports cale...
It’s hard to believe that it is the middle of November already. The nice weather we have had so far makes you wonder what Mother Nature has in store for us for the rest of the winter. My rain gauge says that we have less than half of our normal average rainfall so far, so let’s hope we don’t get the rest of it in the next month and a half. News from Naselle: If you shop at Okie’s Market in Naselle, as most of us do, you probably know that a sweet, personable, hard working friend has left us. Julie Burns passed away this week and will certain...

My husband, son and I made an impromptu visit to our kids in Oregon this past weekend for a short visit and enjoyed some delicious pub food with some of their own brews at Smith Rock Brewing Company in Redmond. Our daughter, son-in-law, son and daughter-in-law will be celebrating their one year anniversary of opening on November 2 and the business has really turned out to be a huge success for them. They have purchased a building to increase their brewing capabilities and the new equipment will be here in about two weeks. They will be able to...
Well, the evenings and mornings are saying it is fall, but the daytime hours are more like summer. I’m not sure if I like it or not. The leaves are falling almost before they change color. Fall seems to be in the air, at least in the morning hours. Night temperatures have been comfortable, though. Guess it’s time to make plans for the rainy season once again. It will be nice to watch the leaves begin to turn and fall. Actually, this is my favorite season of the year. This has really been a summer to remember. Hardly any rain, not too terribly hot, even though it has been pretty muggy. Actually I miss the rain and the green. So much of our grass and vegetation is turning that dead brown color that I hated in California. News from Naselle The 2013-2014 school year is officially underway. Kids are back in class, football and volleyball are the sports to follow, and an early morning chill will be in the air soon. Sports calendar for this week includes: Friday, the 6th-football at Rainier at 7 p.m.; Monday, the...
Our trip to California was wonderful, lots of visiting with old friends, a soccer tournament for our grandson (the team took 3rd place), and lots of hugs and fun time with family. The weather wasn’t too bad, only in the high 80s and low 90s. You can have the noise of the city though and the awful traffic, it was good to come home. News from Naselle: Well, it’s that time again, the last big weekend before the new school year begins on Tuesday, the 3rd at 8:15 a.m. for students of the Naselle-Grays River Valley School District. Let’s go Comet...
As you read this column, my husband and I should be sitting in the heat of central California, on a week long visit with three of our kids and seven of our grandkids. Though I’m not looking forward to California, I am excited to see our family and probably a few friends as well. News from Naselle: Time once again to register for the new school year at Naselle-Grays River Valley High School. The schedule for students is: Friday, the 23rd and Monday, the 26th for new students from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Monday, the 26th at 6 p.m. for 12th grade studen...
News from Naselle: Little 4-year-old Jessi Harman survived a near death accident on Mother’s Day. While her mother was in the barn having the family horse shod, Jessi became entangled in some horse gear and was left lifeless. Due to quick mouth to mouth resuscitation, they were able to get a heartbeat and she was transported via Life Flight to Portland. There is good hope that with therapy Jessi will be able to run, play and return to her old spirited self again. This will require months of therapy which is not covered by insurance. There will...
I don’t know about you, but I certainly enjoyed the little bit of rain we got last week. Our nephew from California thought it was great, as they don’t see much down in the desert. He actually turned on the windshield wipers of his new jeep for the first time since he bought it. News from Naselle: Only another month until the kids are back in school for the new year, but there are activities beginning to take place in preparation for getting back in the groove. There will be a special Naselle-Grays River Valley School board meeting on Tue...
Here it is, August already. Where has this year gone? It seems like there aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done that needs to get done, but I guess time flies when you’re having fun, right? I can say that when I see progress being made on the home front. It looks like we may see a sprinkle of two later this week. I’m looking forward to it. News from Naselle: Kindergarten screening will take place for the Naselle-Grays River Valley School on August 15. The Play and Learn Group meets at the Valley Bible Church each Thursday morni...
It’s still summer, and most folks can’t believe it. This is the longest dry spell that I can remember since we came here 13 years ago. I hear some farmers may even get a third cutting of hay on some of their fields. Does anyone else enjoy the sounds and smells of this country life, with the scent of warm cut grass and the machinery working late into the evenings? It sure beats the sounds of traffic and the smells of city life. News from Naselle: If anyone has a child that they would like to enroll in the Naselle ECEAP program, please con...
Most of us could really get used to this beautiful weather, but I for one, miss the rain. I’m sure the farmers making hay don’t though. A few clouds seem to be rolling in this Tuesday morning, but the weather says it will stay dry and muggy. News from Naselle: There will be a special budget hearing held by the Naselle-Grays River Valley School Board on Tuesday, July 23 at 5:30 p.m. The community is invited to attend. I had a note from Becky Erickson, who has been teaching preschool at the Naselle ECEAP Preschool now for five years and she is...
I hope everyone’s Fourth of July was as wonderful as ours was. We had about 36 people here (even though we were missing half of our kids and grandkids this year) and 13 dogs, and would you believe it, no dog fights. The little ones fell asleep early so the fireworks were postponed until Saturday night, which was just as well as I had to rescue my daughter and son-in-law after they suffered a breakdown in Ridgefield. We didn’t get back until about 10 p.m. that night. There was lots of food (which I didn’t have to prepare), a little rally racin...
I just visited with Bob and Bev Paul at the Rosburg Store and they asked me to let everyone know how much their experience at the Grays River Café has meant to them. They said that the past 10 years here has been the best, they have made so many dear friends, enjoyed the ups and downs of our area (flooding, etc.), and the willingness of everyone to help out when it was needed and appreciate the opportunity they have had to be here in our beautiful, loving community. The people here are very special to them, and they wanted to say a big t...
We have had an almost wonderful visit with our nephew and niece from Yucca Valley, California this past week. I say “almost” because our well decided to give us some problems. Fortunately, my nephew Mark is a plumber, so hopefully we will have no more issues when he returns home at the end of the week. Actually, by giving him a hand, I have learned a few things as well. “Storytime” at the Grays River Valley Library will continue on June 28 at 10 a.m. for your tots. Age appropriate stories will be read with your child. I’m told we will have...
There was lots of lawn mowing and haymaking during that dry spell and with the recent rain soak I’m sure the grass will be growing twice as fast so we can do it all over again. Many in our community took the opportunity to stop in and visit with Bob and Bev Paul during the last few days that the Grays River Café was open, and to wish them well in their new ventures. They have served our community well (literally) with the delicious food that was prepared and served at our local café, and they will be missed. You always felt l...
It looks like we will get a few raindrops in the next couple of days, but it certainly has been nice weather for the past week. After breaking a belt on my lawnmower a couple of weeks ago, and only completing half of the yard at that time, it looked like I would need to bring in the hay equipment to cut the rest of it. Finally the new belt arrived (I bought an extra to have on hand) and thanks to neighbor, Dirk Heitsch it was replaced in a matter of minutes. Several hours later, I had a mowed yard again and a cold brew to celebrate. Now if the...
It is looking a lot more like summer, with the warmer days and more sunshine. I see more lawns being mowed and many farmers cutting the hay fields. Dirk Heitsch has brought his herd of cows back to our pasture and it is a joy to watch the babies romp and play in the tall grass. Dirk spoils “his girls” every day when he comes by. Each one needs to have some individual attention from him and they follow him around like puppy dogs. Maybe that’s why his beef tastes so good. News from Naselle: Congratulations to the Naselle-Grays River Valley Class...
News from Naselle: The final few days of school are here for the Class of 2013 at Naselle-Grays River Valley High School, and a whole new chapter of life is about to open for each of them. By coming this far they should know that nothing can stop them now from doing what they really want to do with the rest of their lives. This class has worked hard for the rewards that lie ahead, and I want to wish them the best. This Sunday at 5:30 p.m. the class of 2013 will participate in Baccalaureate held in the Naselle Commons. Graduation ceremonies for...
