Home, Home, Home! There is nothing like Home! It was a wonderful 6,000 mile journey with one of my sisters, a week long cruise with two of my sons and their families to the western Gulf of Mexico, a few days with a cousin in Arizona that my sister had not seen in over 50 years, and a train ride to the south rim of the Grand Canyon. A once in a lifetime dream come true. That said, I missed everything about home and it is so good to be here again. By the way, I must tell the readers that there really is “Hell.” I have visited there, had my pas...

I hope everyone fared well with the wicked weather we were hit with last weekend. I came home from a wonderful weekend in Oregon with family to water over my driveway and ducks swimming in Lake Fred (normally pasture). And mud. My friend, PJ Katims and I left on Friday and drove through the Eagle Creek fire area to go to Redmond and Bend, Ore. The devastation along the highway is phenomenal. In places the metal guard rails beside the road were melted, with some of the burned trees still standing, but black and looking like skeletons. Thank God...

The 10th Annual Covered Bridge Dinner was just as phenomenal as I remembered it. I had not attended for the last five years due to caring for my husband. The cooks, the music, the setup crews, the donors of the auction items, our illustrious auctioneer, Sheriff Howie, the bidders and the diners and especially the reason we were all there--our kids in 4-H and their programs, everything was perfect. Even the weather was very pleasant. Thank you, everyone for an amazing evening of great music, delicious food and wonderful company. See you next...

Tornados? Oh my goodness, what a weather pattern we had this past week. The weather has gone crazy all over. I was sitting on the couch on Monday with thunder and lightning all around us, hail falling and three 100+ pound dogs in my lap. They are terrified of the noise. In the night during thunder showers, it’s all pile on the bed: Mom will save us. Bet that paints quite a picture. Much needed rain was welcome here and definitely in the fire zones of the state. I would like to give a huge thank you to all the firefighters out there. And a...

It looks like Mother Nature must be mad at something or everything. Unprecedented hurricanes, flooding and fire all over the country is affecting so many people. My prayers go out to the families who are being affected by these catastrophes. Prayers and thanks as well to the firefighters (including my cousin, Tom Hammonds who is responding to the Eagle Creek Fire as I write this), and all the other responders and volunteers who are helping out. Be aware also that the smoke and ash in the air can cause problems with breathing, especially childre...
I am really ready for some rain and cooler temperatures. This is not my cup of tea. On another note, the old adage “the best laid plans” did not work out so well for me this past two weeks. I had company come back the weekend before the eclipse, and the traffic was so bad at my granddaughter’s that I never would have made it in time for the historic event. So, my sister and I, with our cousins, watched it from Grays River, and it was a sight to behold. Then we had another rather nasty dilemma and I flew my nephew who is a plumbing contr...
It has been an interesting week for me. I had a message on Facebook out of the blue from a cousin and his wife asking if I planned to be home the following day. We had probably not seen each other for 25 years, and they were on their way from California to Centralia to visit one of their sons. It was wonderful catching up for a few hours before they were off again with the promise of making this their summer destination now that they are retired. I had no idea they had family so close. Then my son, Carl and his girlfriend decided to come down f...

It’s definitely summer. The hay fields are full of activity, and I am missing the rain. My house has been filled with family for nearly two months, and it looks like that will change by the time this paper is published. Back to quiet times again, and believe me, I will miss that. Please remember the West End Food Pantry when you are out doing your own grocery shopping. Pick up an extra can or two of soup, canned meats, canned fruit or veggies, add a few items to your cart to help out the pantry with "kid friendly" ready-to-eat or e...
I hope everyone had a safe and wonderful 4th of July. Speaking for myself the whole weekend was incredible, filled with family laughs, love and fun. These times are so precious and even though the whole family wasn’t present, it was so special with those who were able to make it. As an added bonus, my nephew and niece will be here for another week before returning to the desert heat of southern California. News from Naselle: Summer is finally here, so there aren’t many school events to write about. If you or your group has an event coming up...
