Kiwanis recycle for children's hospital

The Kiwanis Club of Cathlamet is beginning a recycling program in support of Doernbecher’s Children’s Hospital. A recycling bin has been placed next to the Lions Club newspaper recycling bin at J.C. Thomas Middle School. Acceptable items include any aluminum items and Oregon recyclable plastic bottles, cans, glass bottles or items with an “OR” in the recyclable code area. All proceeds will be donated to Doernbecher to support their cancer research program.

Woman's Club honors Bright with rose bush

The GFWC-Cathlamet Woman's Club planted a rose bush in memory of Judy Bright in the Julia Butler Hansen gardens last Thursday, the 105th anniversary of Butler Hansen's birthday.

"The community was saddened in early April by the loss of Judy," said Woman's Club secretary Margaret Glaser. "The club was pleased to learn of the personal letter Judy received from President Barack Obama recognizing her honor as Citizen of the Year."

Each year, the club plants a rose bush to honor their Citizen of the Year. Bright's husband John C. Thomas, her son the Reverend Chuck Currie, two of her granddaughters, coworkers, friends, past Citizens of the Year and members of the Woman's Club were in attendance at the ceremony.

Arts and crafts sought

for Redmen Hall exhibit

Redmen Hall will hold an exhibit in late August entitled "For the Birds."

Organizers are asking artists and crafters interested in entering the exhibit with items relating to the birds of the Lower Columbia region to contact Redmen Hall.

The items on display, which can include paintings, wood carvings, blown glass, ceramics, photographs, birdhouses, will be for sale.

The exhibit will run from August 18 to September 30.

Those interested in selling items are asked to contact Redmen Hall at Pam Emery or Jill Hatier at the hall at 795-3007.

Republicans set meet and greet

The Wahkiakum County Republican Party will hold a dinner meet and greet at the Duck Inn in Skamokawa with various Republican candidates.

Shahram Hadian, candidate for Washington State Governor, Dixie Kolditz, running for Congress, Rick Winsman, candidate for State Senator and Susan Bate, running for Wahkiakum County Treasurer will be available to answer questions.

The event begins at 6 p.m. on June 29.

Chamber seeks Bald Eagle parade entrants

The Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce is seeking entrants to build floats or organize walks for this year's Bald Eagle Days Parade. This year's theme is Celebrating Local Success, encompassing fishing, farms, logging, business, restaurants, churches, sports, school, clubs and family.

"Get that special car out and all shined up, put your honey by your side and you're in the parade," said Chamber Director Lynda Gerlach. "If walking is your thing, try pets, clowns, dancers, horses, etc. Lets make this the biggest and best parade ever."

Prizes will be awarded in many categories. Entrants are asked to meet at Wahkiakum High School and be in place by 9:30 a.m. and ready for the judges by 10 a.m. Parade applications are available at the chamber office and Bank of the Pacific, as well as online at http://www.wahkiakumchamber.com.
