    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Dec 31, 2009

STILL COLD--As this last week in 2009 begins, I am sitting out here in West Valley with temperatures in the 20s in the early morning hours, so while we enjoyed some clear, blue skies over Christmas, we had to unthaw ourselves first. I was hoping we’d get some of the clear days with no freezing temperatures prior to the sun, but that didn’t happen; it was slick and treacherous out there and our cars were coated with thick, white frost every morning. However, that was better than all that snow we had last year, so while it was not warm by any...

  • What's happening at the Fair?

    Sarah Lawrence, Wah. Co. Eagle|Dec 31, 2009

It’s been an interesting and rewarding year for the fairgrounds, resulting in an amazing new arena. Don’t get me wrong, we’ve had our fair share of ups and downs (no pun intended), with Mother Nature putting us through the ringer time and time again. Yet here we are 12 months down the road and the fairgrounds look better than ever. Working alongside Chuck Beyer and FEMA, I was able to purchase new freezers and refrigerators for the Grange kitchen, totally revamping the equipment, replacing items which hadn’t worked correctly for years. We also...

  • Port 1 preparing for 2010

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Dec 31, 2009

Managers of Port District No. 1 expect solid revenue for operations and facility expansion of the Elochoman Slough Marina in 2010. Port Commissioners LeRoy Burns, Larry Bonds and Brett Deaton adopted their 2010 budget at their October meeting. Their capital improvement plan includes expanding F Dock by 135 feet and, if grant funding is approved, adding more cabins to the three already existing at the marina. Manager Jackie Lea and Assistant Manager Abe York reported the dock project will cost $58,000, and extending electricity will cost...

  • Fish and Wildlife to continues trapping fish

    Stevan Morgain|Dec 31, 2009

In 2008, Fish and Wildlife implemented new policies and strategies for trapping salmon hatchery fish in the lower Columbia River region. Fish and Wildlife's Regional Fish Manager Pat Frazier explained it is because the old methods of rearing fish in pens have had an adverse affect on the growth of wild salmon and steelhead populations in the lower Columbia River. The study outlined by WDFW in 2008 is to help recover endangered and threatened wild salmon and steelhead populations in the Columbia River. Frazier said, "These modifications are...

  • Fair dealing with funding cut

    Stevan Morgain|Dec 31, 2009

The Wahkiakum County Fair still struggles to survive in a financial climate less hospitable than in years past. Late in 2009, Wahkiakum County commissioners told the fair board they hadn’t budgeted funds for the 2010 fair season. The state also has threatened to reduce its contribution to fair operations, so far, not saying by how much. "Part of the problem is the fair board and fair manager both came to us in 2009 and said they wouldn’t need the $17,500 the county usually budgets for the fair each year,” said Commissioner Blair Brady. Brady...

  • New mayor weighs in on LNG debate

    Dec 31, 2009

To The Eagle: I am writing to clarify aspects of your coverage of the Town Council’s LNG “debate” published in The Eagle’s 12/24 issue. First, my position is that the Town of Cathlamet should monitor the ongoing negotiations between Wahkiakum County and NorthernStar, the Texas-based organization that plans to construct a LNG facility several miles from Cathlamet -- not become a signatory to any agreement they might make. Second, we must stay well-informed because the issues under negotiation could potentially impact our town’s waterfron...

  • Conservation district working with community

    Dec 31, 2009

To The Eagle: Thank you for the article regarding Wahkiakum Conservation District’s and our partners activities in the Skamokawa Watershed. Two projects were highlighted including the Historic Skamokawa Creek Channel Restoration project and the Skamokawa Community Watershed project. The projects were presented from a flood perspective yet both more appropriately address other natural resource concerns. The Historic Skamokawa Creek Channel Restoration project includes installation of a freshwater inlet structure (completed), upgrading the o...

***Advertisement*** WAHKIAKUM WEST TELEPHONE has been the local telephone company serving the Grays River and Naselle areas since approximately 1927. During the intervening years, we have worked hard to build a telephone system that would provide high quality telecommunications services to the communities we serve. We have done this notwithstanding the higher costs of serving rural areas in the State of Washington and when few, if any, other telephone companies were interested in serving our communities. We have served and intend to continue...

  • Former Naselle student returns from volunteer work

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Dec 31, 2009

Where did 2009 go? I can€™t believe it€™s almost 2010. That means we have lived here for 10 years, and it seems like we moved in yesterday. I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. Our household certainly did. We even got to visit with three of our former puppies. What a trip watching five big dogs wrestle and run in the fields. They are all related, as we have the mother, father and big brother, and they all seem to remember that this is where they came from. We also got a Christmas card fro...
