Born on May 21, 2020, in Vancouver, Wash., Logan filled every moment of his five precious years with laughter, curiosity, and boundless energy. Dear Kay: On behalf of everyone at the Wahkiakum County Historical Society I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks for your 30 years of service to the Wahkiakum County Eagle, the residents of Wahkiakum County, and the Wahkiakum County Historical Society. Your dedication has uplifted, informed, and supported this great community. All of your mentions of the Museum has brought in so many people that: forgot about us, haven’t been for years, and “just came in because of Kay’s article”! Happy Retirement and again, thank you. Frans Eykel,...
To The Eagle, In looking at the upcoming election for Wahkiakum County Sheriff, I feel that Sheriff John Mason is the overwhelming best choice. Having watched him since taking over the position he has displayed good judgements in his decisions and as well, a very high degree of maturity in his approach to the job. The job of Sheriff requires patience, integrity, leadership, communication skills, along with adaptability and problem-solving skills. A Sheriff has to also be able to make sound judgement calls, many times under extreme and...
To The Eagle, In last week’s Eagle, Kathy Briggs raised good questions about the two Town measures on the November 4 ballot. Here’s what is outlined in public information from the Town of Cathlamet and Wahkiakum PUD. On the levy: If Proposition 1 passes, the Town’s property tax rate would increase to $2.00 per $1,000 of assessed value in 2026. That new rate becomes the base for future years, and under state law (RCW 84.55) it can rise only about one percent per year unless voters approve another lid lift. The Town cannot raise it freely each...
To The Eagle, Commissioner Upthegrove was elected on a promise to permanently protect 77,000 acres of Legacy Forest. Yet his day-one action was only a temporary pause, not a true moratorium. Last month, when he held a press conference to announce “permanent protection” of those 77,000 acres, the map told a different story. It was riddled with mistakes — protecting only part of the promised acreage while putting 29,000 acres, including some of the most ecologically valuable forests, back on the auction block for logging. This is a broken promi...

Vendors lined the room, their tables overflowing with handmade quilts, pottery, jewelry, knives, and an impressive array of baked goods. Everything from cinnamon rolls and cookies to delicious loaves of sourdough bread was on display. Many familiar faces from the West Wahkiakum...
WET AND WILD. Well, I guess you know, this past Saturday and Saturday night was pretty doggone exciting as the winds were howling and the rain was falling so hard that one couldn't even see if you were out driving in it, so it was pretty crazy out there. There were power outages due to falling trees and of course, the tree debris was everywhere, so the safest place to be was at home I think. Of course, those of us with a lot of trees were holding our breath as we love them but not when they fall on our houses or garages...ha! I'm thankful that...

Apparently, at some point when I wasn’t paying attention, the wet season began. It’s raining as I write this on Sunday, Oct. 26. It was raining yesterday and the day before. Both of Julie’s 55-gallon rain barrels that hold the water running off the roof of the greenhouse are now overflowing. Local deer hunters - those trying to fill tags during this final weekend of modern rifle season - have been damp for a couple of days now. Puget Island has been surprisingly quiet. Still, it’s a transitional time of year for Mother Nature and her minions...

Clatskanie remained undefeated following its 21-14 victory last Thursday at Knappa. Quite the contrast to last week's 55-26 victory over Neah-Kah-Nie, all three of Clatskanie's scores came through the air. The first score of the game by way of a 26-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Will Van Voorst to junior wide receiver Michael Simpson in the first quarter. Van Voorst would connect on a 17-yard touchdown pass with senior wide receiver Daylon Gutierrez in the second quarter to...

This year, the Clatskanie High School band is comprised of 14 members who bring a mix of new faces and experienced musicians. Despite its small size, the group brings big energy to ev...

One more game remains in the regular season for both Wahkiakum and Naselle. Entering their final contests, the Mules and Comets are riding momentum from wins in their penultimate matchups. Naselle After Taholah forfeited against Naselle last week, the Comets hosted Ocosta on senior night and honored their veteran players by going out and outscoring the Wildcats 40-0 in just the first half of the matchup. Unfortunately for Head Coach Kevin McNulty and his group, a power outage cut the game short,...
