To The Eagle: The town’s water system has had two large leaks this past week. During both events, there were neighbors who helped trouble shoot which I sincerely appreciate. Our leak on 3rd Street has really damaged the road there, and I will work to get that fixed as quickly as possible. The other leak, which we had a hard time finding, will be much more difficult to repair. It occurred on Sunday night and caused homeowners effected to have low to no pressure at their homes. We lost about a quarter of our reservoir storage in around two h...
To The Eagle: I don’t know if you saw last week’s letter in The Eagle, but there will be more to come about the mayor having the town treasurer pay $1,000 earnest money to purchase a parking lot, prior to their executive session. Later, it was on the town council’s upcoming agenda under “Property acquisition – action expected.” This was at least three months ago. What happened between then and their last June 18 meeting, I don’t know. Did the Department of Ecology do a soil inspection and sign off, allowing change of ownership, or are we now...

A new coffee shop, Patty Cakes Cafe and Roasting, is open for business in downtown Cathlamet. The owner, Patty Vezaldenos, grew up in Stockton, California. After moving to the St. Helen's/Scappoose area in 1980, she lived in Columbia County for over 30 years and had three drive through espresso shops and a roasting and baking company. She sold the business several years ago. "I've been wanting coffee back in my life ever since," Vezaldenos said. But life had her going in other directions. She...
WEEKEND--This past weekend wasn't the best one we've had, but it wasn't too bad either. We saw a few, very light sprinkles on Saturday morning but for the most part, it was dry and kind of humid, so one could still get out there and work in the yard or tackle other outdoor duties. If you were lucky, you just got to enjoy the day and had a play day instead of a work day! Sunday saw some misty moments as well, but its showers were brief and it wasn't too bad. While I woke up to wetness on Monday morning, they say we're heating up this week, so I...

Wahkiakum County commissioners discussed addiction treatment and other health care issues when they met Tuesday in Cathlamet. Dian Cooper, executive director of the Cowlitz Family Health Clinic, said staff of the center's clinics will soon be certified to prescribe a new treatment of opiate addiction and overdoses, suboxone. Once certified, clinic staff will be able to administer the treatment to the public and in the county jail. The new treatment, however, is expensive, about $100 per month for generic brands. "So, before we start using it,...

By Rick Nelson State highway construction work around Cathlamet is almost ready to enter new stages. Painters on the Puget Island bridge last week completed work on their first section and are moving curtains to begin work on the next portion. They'll do much of their work at night, 9 p.m. to 4...
To The Eagle: I had to re-read Elizabeth Brinner’s article in last week’s Eagle a couple of times to make sure it was a serious letter. Initially I thought it was a poor attempt at satire. Not so I guess. I’m assuming she’s recently moved from Seattle, Portland or a city of similar size, which would explain her problem adjusting to the lifestyle we all enjoy living in Wahkiakum County. Before retiring to Cathlamet, I left a big city, fast paced, professional career working under neon lights and in front of a computer screen all day. After work,...
To The Eagle: The recent vote by the Cathlamet town Council to purchase the property owned by former Council member Bernadette Goodroe was clearly unethical and an obvious gift of public funds. When the existing gas station and auto repair shop were removed the site went through a remediation process to remove the majority of the contamination, but due to technical difficulties the site could not be fully abated. Consequently, the State of Washington Department of Ecology placed a restricted covenant on the property because residual...

Eleven strangers have embarked on an adventure to travel the west coast from Seattle to San Diego for a common cause--to raise funds for a refuge in Texas to help victims of sex trafficking and to bring awareness to a problem that is quietly pervasive even in the United States. “It started last year with three girls,” Isabel Mayne, a senior at the University of Texas said. “Two went to UT and the other went to the University of Arkansas. They were all just friends who got together and start...
NICE WEEKEND--While we ended last Friday with a few sprinkles here in West Valley, it wasn't much, and the clouds on Saturday morning cleared off and gave a perfect day for the Kite Festival at Vista Park. It also made shopping at the Puget Island Garage and Yard Sale a lot nicer as well. Things warmed up a little more on Sunday but with a nice breeze here, it was just about perfect. However, by nightfall, we saw some big raindrops start to fall, and then some bright, flashing lightning cross the sky and after that, some of the loudest, house...

The Wahkiakum Chamber board wants to see local storefronts filled, merchants happy and visitors big-eyed. The Chamber is looking to fill two board member positions on their Board of Directors. Ideally, they would like one of the spots to be filled by someone that lives or works in the west end of the county in Grays River or Rosburg as they strive to better represent the entire county and extend their connections. If your mission is inline with theirs this may be the position for you. Serving on the board is a rewarding experience and an...

Along with the Kite Festival and the Puget Island Garage Sale there was the national Amateur Radio Field Day wherein roughly 40,000 amateur radio operators all over the country take their radios and antennas out of their houses and into a field for 24 hours to test emergency preparedness. Our county's radio club, N7WAH, with the help of Wahkiakum PUD, Wahkiakum 4-H, Wahkiakum School District and Smokey Waters set up at a baseball...

The Cathlamet Town Council on Monday voted to buy a parking lot and unleashed a storm of reaction from town citizens. The property in question is on the corner of Main and Butler streets adjacent to the Bank of Pacific parking lot. Owner is Bernadette Goodroe, a former council member. The council reconvened in open session after an executive session to discuss the possible real estate purchase, and Mayor Dale Jacobson called for a motion to purchase the lot. "They were asking $75,000, and I was able to get it down to $68,000," Jacobson said. "I...
