    Rick Nelson|Sep 21, 2017

They concluded the day with an executive session to hear comments from a committee assigned to interview candidates for the position of director of Health & Human Services, and they recessed to Wednesday afternoon when they would hold two more executive sessions to interview the candidates themselves, holding open the option of reconvening the meeting in open session to pick the new director. • Board should consider roundabout decision

    Sep 21, 2017

To The Eagle: To be against the idea of roundabouts just because one doesn't like them is not keeping the best interests of the community in mind. These traffic safety structures provide a practical way to slow traffic while including nice highway landscaping. As for our local truckers, most have no objection. Those who have used the Warrenton roundabout find traffic there easy to deal with. At least 10 times as many log trucks use that facility there as compared to here on SR 4. The Port of Astoria Log Shipping Yard is right there. Have you...

The second time would result in a $100 fine, the third...

  • Kites will be flying at Vista Park on September 23

    Kay Chamberlain|Sep 21, 2017

WET, WET--As this week began, we had quite a bit of rain and wind too! With all the dry forests around us and the fires raging in so many parts of the PNW, it was really a welcome relief, and it beat the snow that Montana got, as I'm not quite ready for that yet! By the end of the week, we are supposed to have some drier weather return so that will be a relief to all those with outdoor plans for the weekend. In the meantime, I'm listening to the roar of some thunder and hearing there are water spouts along the coast; wild Monday for sure!...

  • Writer wonders about health care

    Toni Below|Sep 14, 2017

To The Eagle: What’s all the commotion on healthcare about? I remember when we worked, so much was taken out of our paychecks for SS, Medicare and Federal. Then we had up to three options of what type of health benefits we could choose from, Kaiser, Blue Cross, etc. Have the companies stopped providing health benefits? If so, why? Is it because the government taxed them so much with fees and regulations that they could no longer provide decent health benefits for its employees? I understand those with health issues need some type of health i...

  • Wahkiakum Mules are on two game winning streak

    Kay Chamberlain|Sep 14, 2017

DAMPNESS--It was great to have a little bit of moisture this past weekend, although I'm not sure everyone agreed as there were a lot of things going on, like people camping and fancy cars and trucks headed to car shows, that would rather have had it dry. The beginning of this week was due to be dry and warm, while a cool down and maybe even a few more showers may be falling upon us by the time you read this. However, as we all know, the weather is subject to change from one day to the next. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Sept....

  • Commissioners: Reduce SR 4 speed, but no roundabouts

    Rick Nelson|Sep 7, 2017

While county officials agree they'd like to see lower speeds on SR 4 in the Cathlamet area, they don't want to use traffic circles to accomplish that end. County Engineer Paul Lacy on Tuesday asked commissioners if they'd like to include in the county's Six Year Road Improvement Plan a proposal to install traffic circles, also called roundabouts, at SR 4 intersections with Main and Columbia streets and make modifications to the highway that would slow traffic. Citing distaste for traffic circles, commissioners voted against the proposal....
