The Cathlamet Fire Department wants to buy a new fire truck, but when presented with a financing plan, members of the town council put on the brakes at their monthly meeting on Monday. Fire Chief Vernon Barton has proposed buying a demonstration model at a price of $412,015. With a $100,000 down payment from existing funds, the town would need to finance $344,564.18. The vendor, True North Emergency Equipment of Hillsboro, Ore., has proposed a lease-to-purchase financing plan with options to pay off in either seven, eight, nine or 10 years. Ann...

The Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners listened to reports and approved a new credit card purchasing policy at their meeting July 5. They also discussed the possibility of conducting a poll to ascertain the public’s interest in a merger of the PUD and the Town of Cathlamet’s water systems. General Manager Dave Tramblie reported that he had been informed that the Cathlamet transformer was in good condition after a recent assessment. Pacific County has begun construction on their portion...
To The Eagle: Thirty-eight years ago last April I was appointed by the Wahkiakum County Board of Commissioners as Wahkiakum District Court Judge. I have been elected and reelected in each election since then by the voters in the county. As a young child and fourth generation Wahkiakum County citizen I walked the streets of Cathlamet with eyes wide with wonder at the marvels of this community and its inhabitants. I have witnessed many changes in Wahkiakum County over the years. The independence and resilience of this community encourage me that...
To The Eagle: I would like to provide some missing content and context to the 6/29/17 article entitled “PUD not interested in water system merge.” I attended the PUD meeting because I had heard differing accounts of a study conducted regarding the Cathlamet’s water system. I wanted to hear about the study, its purpose and conclusions. The commissioner’s comments in the article were in response to my inquiry. Bob Junger’s comments did not surprise me. He articulately summed up the frustrations I’ve heard from many others. I explained w...
To The Eagle: What I said in in my letter two months ago was that I am sick and tired of the whining from the superannuated fogies in our country (and county) who can't accept (boohoo) the results of our national election. What Reagan said was true: “You know so much that just isn't true.” Mike Swift Cathlamet...

DRY SPELL--Last Friday was the beginning of the burn ban for our area, and with all this dry weather we've been having, and blazes all over the western states, it's definitely not the time to be lighting a fire to burn any brush. As we head into another stretch of nice weather they say, here's hoping you've been paying attention and not gotten yourself a fine by burning when you shouldn't! Last Friday's cloudy morning and cooler temperatures were just right for working outside, although my back wouldn't really agree with it much, as it's...

She was one of 17 nurses honored that day, out of what someone estimated to be 50,000 nurses in Southwest Washington and all of Oregon. I feel kind of humbled going to Portland and getting an award or meeting with the regional chief nursing...
Of all things, Paige Lake was thinking about black chalk last Friday. It was just one of many minor details the director for the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce needed to be addressed for the coming Bald Eagle Days in Cathlamet. The chalk Lake had purchased for the Sidewalk Chalk Art Contest scheduled for Friday, July 14, was colorful, but short on black. The coordinator for the event had asked for more, citing its popularity in past years. So Lake found a recipe online and she and other volunteer...

I hope your Fourth of July was fantastic! As we gear up for summer activities, I wanted to point out that I made an error in last week’s announcements. With that said, please remember that we have our free Computer Classes and Worksource Job Opportunities and Strategies every first Wednesday of the month from 10 a.m. to noon. Any level of computer skills needed is available. Bald Eagle Days is just around th...
