  • Impact of fishing rod class goes beyond their dreams

    Diana Zimmerman|Jul 14, 2016

With the help from some friends, Puget Island resident Bud Mickelsen is seeing an old dream come true, to share fishing rod building with people who could benefit from and enjoy the art. Mickelsen has been building fishing rods for the better part of 66 years. But first, let's step back in time a bit. In the early 2000s, Wahkiakum High School Voc/Ag teacher John Doumit had heard Mickelsen talk about raising money for Dollars for Scholars. He also found out that Mickelsen built rods. "The last tw...

  • Bald Eagle Days starts this Friday

    Diana Zimmerman|Jul 14, 2016

Bald Eagle Days 2016 is upon us, and it’s not going to rain, if Paige Lake the Chamber of Commerce executive director and coordinator for the big event has anything to say about it. She’s been watching the weather for a week. On Tuesday, the 50 percent chance of rain predicted had decreased to 10 percent and the highs were expected to be in the mid 60s. The first indication of this weekend’s festivities will appear on Thursday evening as signs will be posted warning residents and visitors parked...

  • Primary election forum to be held Tuesday

    Jul 14, 2016

MIXED--When it came to nice days or wet days, it sure depended on where you were last weekend as to how good of a day it was. As I was looking at black skies and watched the rain pound down, I saw postings and pictures of folks enjoying the sunshine as close by as Cathlamet, Rainer and as far away as Sunriver! But West Valley seemed to have hooked onto a rain cloud and it was making sure it gave my lawn a good watering; one perk of the rain I guess! We'll just hope the blue skies will show back up as suggested by the weather maps and the Bald...

  • Erosion aid starting to be a race against time

    Rick Nelson|Jul 7, 2016

As Wahkiakum County moves slowly through the process to set up sites for placing dredged sands on eroding shorelines, some Cape Horn residents are starting to think they may have to take matters into their own hands. The county has been working for a year with residents of Puget Island's East Sunny Sands and more recently the Cape Horn area east of Cathlamet to get dredged sand dumped on eroding beaches. The county has hired a consulting engineering firm to handle the environmental studies and...

  • Island couple to be parade grand marshals

    Diana Zimmerman|Jul 7, 2016

Bud and Dottie Mickelsen must have made an impression in the 18 years they've lived on Puget Island, because this year they will be the grand marshals of the Bald Eagle Days Parade on July 16. Like a lot of people who are committed to service, the Mickelsens didn't want to talk much about themselves, preferring to talk about the Warriors and Widows event they started last year. The event teams veterans, widows, and children of veterans with local volunteers who take them fishing on the Columbia...

Hancock Timber was being required to remove a section of the Deep River mainline road and had contacted Tramblie to let him know that this would include part of the PUD’s water main. Tramblie reported that the PUD would put in a temporary line and put the new main in on the newly graded slope when it was done. According to Tramblie, the PUD is required to relocate the pipe and w...

  • Support sought for AmeriCorps volunteer

    Jul 7, 2016

To The Eagle: Margaret Lapic, c/o Americorps Grants Program Subject: Grant status for Wahkiakum County Dear Ms. Lapic: As a committed volunteer at both the Cathlamet Community Center, and the Cathlamet Library, it was immensely disappointing to learn that the Americorps grant to continue support for a coordinator position at the Community Center was denied for fiscal 2016-2017. I realize that Wahkiakum is a much smaller community than Cowlitz County, but we have basic needs as does your county. We have no youth center, no senior center, and...

    Jul 7, 2016

To The Eagle: The 19th Legislative District in Washington State, which includes Cowlitz, Wahkiakum, Pacific, Lewis and Grays Harbor counties, has had no representation of women in that district in over thirty years! We now have an opportunity for an educated, informed, and experienced candidate in Teresa Purcell. Teresa was raised in this area; she cares about this area; and, through her business and contacts from Olympia, Teresa knows the process. Isn't it time? Teresa has my vote - join me! Sandra Davis Cathlamet...

  • Flea market set for Saturday at Fairgrounds

    Kay Chamberlain|Jul 7, 2016

OFF & ON HOLIDAY--Our Fourth of July holiday started out pretty nice for the first couple of days, but we woke up to rain here in West Valley on both Sunday and Monday. If you happen to be one of these people who are experiencing low water levels in your creek or well, I'm guessing you were pretty happy to see some rain fall, but that little bit probably won't do you much good, but it does take down the fire danger a bit, and with massive fires in some areas, the rain is a good thing. I hear we are to get some real rain by the end of the week...

  • Can we do without politicians?

    Jun 30, 2016

To The Eagle: There are two types of taxpayers: authentic taxpayers and taxpayers. The authentic taxpayers are homeowners and employees that earn their wages by working for themselves or nongovernment businesses. Taxpayers are homeowners and employees that work for the government and they earn their wages by pocketing off the authentic taxpayers’ paychecks. That said, I’m all for paying our military, veterans, law enforcements, firefighters, roads and education. However, I question the thousands of politicians living high off the authentic tax...
