  • Visitors thank cemetery crew

    Jun 9, 2016

To The Eagle: My husband and I prepare every year for our annual visit to our local cemetery. To prepare we load fresh cut ferns, cut flowers, along with a scrub brush, hand grass clippers, rags, cleaning solution, two gallons of water and a large screwdriver to remove the upside down vase that is in front of the headstone (usually it is stuck because moles have pushed dirt inside the vase.) When we get the vase out we have to clean inside as the dirt is packed in it. We brush dirt off the stones, wash using the scrub brush, rinse the...

  • Wahkiakum High graduation Friday

    Kay Chamberlain|Jun 9, 2016

PLENTY WARM!--All those heat lovers must have been totally pumped about the heat wave we had last weekend, and even the days prior to and after that, as it was plenty hot, that's for sure! Anytime temps are in the upper 90s at the beginning of June for several days in Skamokawa, with no wind and temperatures still around 70 in the latter part of the evening, well, that's really rare; and uncomfortable! I hear we are supposed to cool down by the time you read this and we should even see some rain, so I know my lawn is going to enjoy that, and...

  • Car show Saturday at fairgrounds park

    Kay Chamberlain|Jun 2, 2016

MIXED BAG--This week started out a bit damp here in West Valley and some other places, but later on in the day it got real nice. By now, you should have been enjoying a lot more sun, but we also know what that means: stupid people doing stupid things. Heads up people, do not leave your children or your animals in your vehicle! It's amazing that anyone would allow a child to be alone in a rig anyway, but on hot days, it's deadly and totally unforgivable. Animals are best left at home on these warm days. So if you truly love them please keep...

  • May is Older Americans Month

    May 26, 2016

To the Eagle: Flash back to July 1965 and Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones were at the top of the charts singing I Can’t Get No Satisfaction. Our country was conflicted by the war in Viet Nam while President Lyndon Johnson was waging a War on Poverty back home. The Older Americans Act (OAA) and Medicare/Medicaid were established in response to concerns about the lack of community services for older persons. At that time, nearly a third of older Americans lived in poverty. The OAA supports a range of home and community-based services, such a...

  • Art teacher is a gift to students

    May 26, 2016

To the Eagle: When my son, now a Wahkiakum High School senior, was in preschool at St. James, a delicate lady named Mrs. Hauge would come to teach the children about classical art. Some might think preschoolers wouldn’t absorb the knowledge she shared, but I watched rapt three-year-olds, and, even months later, heard my son’s accounts of the art postcards she gave each child. Mrs. Hauge was my first -- and these children’s first - - introduction to our local art angels, community members who expose young people to the arts. Much more recently,...
